With our Mac app you can send files straight from your desktop — either from the menu bar or by right-clicking files in Finder.
Where to find the Mac app
Our Mac app lives in your menu bar. Once you download it from the App Store, you'll find it waiting for you in the top right corner. If you want the app to automatically start on startup, change the app settings by clicking on the logo, selecting the gear icon, and going into Settings.
System requirements
- You'll require macOS 12.4 or higher to install the Mac WeTransfer app.
- Make sure you install the latest version from the App Store — we ship new features and bug fixes with every release.
- Upload size limits match our web and mobile services. With a WeTransfer subscription you can send as many transfers as your plan offers.
Sending a transfer
- Click the app logo in the menu bar and select + Upload files.
- Or drag and drop your file onto the app icon — your upload will begin immediately.
- When the upload is complete, the icon changes to a circle with a checkmark, and your download link is ready to copy.
- Scroll through previously sent transfers by clicking the We icon — hover over any transfer and click Copy link.
Sending folders
Drag and drop your folder onto the Mac app icon in your device's menu bar to send it. The Mac app preserves the folder structure.
Sending with Finder Extension
Enable the Finder Extension to send files by right-clicking them in Finder.
- Open the Mac app and click the gear icon in the top right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Locate the Extensions section and check the box next to Finder Extension.
- It will automatically open a list of apps. Find WeTransfer, enable Finder Extension, and click Done.
Now right-click a file (or multiple files) in Finder. A Create a transfer option appears under Quick actions.
You can also add the WeTransfer icon to your Finder toolbar. Right-click the toolbar > Customize Toolbar > drag WeTransfer to it. If you open a folder first and click the icon, a transfer with all of the files in the folder will be created. You may need to grant access to private folders — a pop-up will appear where you can click Provide access.
Setting a default expiry date
With a paid WeTransfer subscription, you can set a custom default expiry longer than the free default.
- Click the We icon in your menu bar to open the Mac app.
- Click the gear icon in the top right-hand corner, then Settings.
- Find 'Delete transfers after' and select your default duration.
All transfers sent from your Mac app from then on will use the default expiry date you set.
Confirmation emails
The Mac app is designed for link transfers — we won't email you the download link, and we won't send a confirmation email every time your transfer is downloaded. You will receive a confirmation email the first time your transfer is fully downloaded.
To automatically copy every link to your clipboard, click the app logo, then the gear icon, and go into Settings. Enable 'auto-copy link to clipboard'.
Notifications
If you're not receiving notifications when your upload completes, check your macOS notification settings for the WeTransfer app.
Quitting or logging out
To quit:
- Click the WeTransfer app icon in the top-right corner of your Mac menu bar.
- Click the gear icon.
- From the list of options, select Quit.
To log out (without quitting): click the We icon > gear icon > Settings > Log out. When you re-open the app, you'll be prompted to log back in with your credentials or a social login.
Fixing upload issues on the Mac app
- Check that you have the latest app version installed via the App Store. We ship new features and bug fixes with every release.
- Check that your macOS is up to date. Older systems can sometimes cause the app to misbehave.
- Check that you have a stable Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection.
- Try sending a transfer via our website to see if it works — this helps identify whether the issue is specific to the app.
- Restart your Mac.
- Close and reopen the app: tap the We icon > gear icon > Quit.
- Uninstall and reinstall the app from the App Store.
If the above didn't work, tap Report an issue in the app's Settings. Include a screen recording that shows what happens when you try to upload — it'll help us identify the problem faster.
