Request files from someone

File requests help you get the files you need from anyone.

What are file requests?

Use file requests to get photos from family, professional video files for a project, or documents for your business. Make it easy for anyone to upload files to you from any device.

  • Share a file request link with one or a few people or a broad audience.
  • Include instructions to get the correct files.
  • Track status to help you manage your work.
  • Your custom background (available to some paid plans) will appear to show off your brand.

How to create a file request

  1. On the WeTransfer homepage, tap Request Files.
  2. Give your file request a Title. This is required and will be used to identify transfers from this file request.
  3. Add instructions (optional) — provide your audience with helpful info on what you need.
  4. When done, tap the big blue button to create your request link.
  5. Copy the link to send it to your audience.

Pre-filled request messages

When you fill in the Instructions field while creating a request, that message appears above the upload area for anyone using your link. Use it to set expectations clearly so you receive what you actually need on the first try.

  • Be specific about file types: "Please upload as .png or .jpg, not PDF."
  • Name conventions: "Name files YourName-Project-Date so we can sort them quickly."
  • Deadlines: include a date so uploaders know when you need the files by.
  • Quality or resolution requirements: e.g. "Minimum 1920×1080, original camera files preferred."

Keep the message concise — a few short lines work better than a long paragraph. You can edit the instructions on an existing request at any time from your Sent tab.

Your control over received transfers

Unlike other transfers you receive by email, link, or your custom page, you have full control of these transfers. You can extend the expiration up to the limit on your plan: up to 30 days on Ultimate or Teams, and 3 days on Free or Starter.

Go to your Received tab, select the transfer, and modify the expiration date directly from the transfer details page. After your audience uploads to your request, you will receive an email notification with a link to view the transfer and download files. Your audience will not receive a notification when you download.

Note: these transfers get all the benefits of your plan in terms of file size and expiration, and they count toward your total storage quota.
