When you send a transfer, WeTransfer sends you automated notifications at key moments — when your upload completes, when the recipient downloads, and shortly before the transfer expires. On iOS, you can swap email confirmations for push notifications.
The two confirmation emails
- Upload confirmation — sent as soon as your files are fully and safely stored on our servers. There may be a short delay between the upload completing and the email arriving, as we confirm the entire transfer is stored before sending it.
- Download confirmation — sent when the recipient downloads the transfer. For email transfers, this is triggered when they click the download link in the email we send them and complete the download. For link transfers, you receive one confirmation email the first time the transfer is fully downloaded, regardless of how many times the link is opened after that.
Other notifications you'll receive
- Expiry reminder — sent 2 days before the transfer expires, whether or not it has been downloaded. This gives you time to extend the expiration or re-send the transfer if needed.
- Bounced or misspelled recipient email — if a recipient's address is invalid or bouncing, you'll receive a notification with a download link you can share with them directly.
- Comment notification — sent each time someone leaves a comment on a file in your transfer preview. Comments can be disabled at any time from the transfer's Extra settings.
Notification settings
- If you send a lot of link transfers and find the notifications overwhelming, you can manage them from your Notification settings page.
- You can only unsubscribe from confirmation emails for link transfers. Confirmation emails for email transfers cannot be turned off.
- Expiry reminder preferences can also be managed from the Notification settings page.
iOS push notifications
If you use the WeTransfer iOS app, you can get a push notification on your iPhone when a transfer is uploaded or downloaded instead of (or alongside) the email confirmation.
- Make sure WeTransfer has permission to send notifications: open the iOS Settings app > Notifications > WeTransfer > Allow Notifications.
- Open the WeTransfer iOS app > tap your profile icon > Settings > Notifications.
- Toggle on Upload complete and Transfer downloaded to choose which events trigger a push.
Push notifications work whether the app is open or in the background, as long as you have notifications enabled at the system level. If you stop receiving pushes, check both the iOS Settings permission and the in-app toggle.
Verifying your recipient's identity
If you want to confirm exactly who downloaded your transfer, Access Control lets you verify recipient identities before granting download access. You'll receive a confirmation email once a verified recipient downloads the file.
