How to let recipients edit a transfer you've sent

Want the people you've sent a transfer to — a teammate, a collaborator, friends after a shared event — to add their own files? You can give specific recipients permission to edit a transfer after it's been sent, so everyone can contribute to one shared set of files.

What recipients can and can't do

When you give someone edit access to a transfer, they can:

  • Add files to the transfer.
  • Remove files they added themselves.

They can't:

  • Remove your files.
  • Remove files that other editors added.
  • Edit the transfer without a WeTransfer account — they'll need a free account and to be signed in.

You stay in control: you can remove any file at any time, and revoke an editor's access whenever you want.

Give recipients edit access when sending a transfer

  1. Start a new transfer on wetransfer.com.
  2. Open the transfer settings and find the access control settings.
  3. Enter the email addresses of the recipients you'd like to give edit access.
  4. Finish setting up your transfer and hit Send.

Editors don't get a separate invitation email at send time. They'll see they can edit when they open the transfer preview, where they'll find an Edit button.

Add or remove editors after sending

You can change who can edit a transfer at any time before it expires.

  1. Go to your Transfers sent page.
  2. Open the transfer you want to manage.
  3. In the transfer settings, find Who can edit?, click Manage and update the list — add new email addresses or remove existing editors.

When you add someone as an editor after the transfer has already been sent, they'll receive an email with a link straight to the transfer.

If you remove an editor, they immediately lose access. Any files they added stay in the transfer — removing an editor doesn't remove their files, but as the owner you can delete those files at any time.

Approving edit requests from recipients

A recipient without edit access will see a Request to Edit button when they open the transfer. When they click it:

  • The button changes to Edit Request Sent so they know their request is pending.
  • You get an email with Approve and Deny buttons.

If you approve, the recipient gets edit access and receives an invite-to-edit email. If you deny, the request is dismissed and the recipient isn't notified.

To turn off the ability for recipients to request edit access: in the transfer details, click Manage next to who can access/edit, then turn off the Allow edit requests toggle.

What happens when a recipient edits your transfer

  • The transfer shows who uploaded each file — you'll see "Added by you" on your files and the editor's name on theirs.
  • You and all other editors receive a summary email after each editing session, listing what was added or removed and by whom.

Notes

  • Editors need a WeTransfer account. If a recipient doesn't have one, they'll be prompted to sign up before they can edit.
  • Only you can remove other people's files. Editors can only remove files they uploaded themselves.
  • You can revoke edit access at any time. Removing an editor doesn't delete any files they've already added.
  • Transfers edited by recipients keep the same expiry date as the original transfer.
  • Only one user can edit a transfer at a time. Edit access is blocked while someone else is editing.
