Several factors outside of WeTransfer can affect your upload speed. Here's how to identify and resolve them.
Check your connection speed
Run a speed test at speedtest.net — select Dublin as your server if you're in Europe, or New York if you're outside Europe. Compare your upload speed against the size of your transfer using an online upload time calculator. We recommend an upload speed of at least 5 Mbps for a smooth experience.
Common causes and fixes
- Shared network — if others on your network are streaming, gaming, or uploading at the same time, that reduces your available bandwidth.
- Router issues — restart your modem and router.
- Browser or extensions — try a different up-to-date browser or incognito mode. Disable browser extensions one by one.
- Antivirus or firewall — temporarily disable to test whether they're affecting speed. Re-enable after testing.
- VPN — if you're connected to a corporate VPN or organization network, check with your IT department. Try disabling the VPN to test.
- ISP throttling — your internet provider may be slowing down your upload activity. Installing a VPN can bypass this, or contact your ISP directly.
- Outdated software — make sure your operating system and browser are up to date.
