"Hmm, something went wrong" error message

If you see 'Hmm, something went wrong' immediately after clicking Transfer, something prevented the upload from starting correctly. Retrying usually resolves it.

What's happening

When an upload begins, WeTransfer splits the transfer into small chunks and uploads them one at a time. If any chunk fails to reach our servers — due to a brief drop in connection, a file still being open in another application, or interference from a background process — the upload can't complete and this error appears.

What to do

  • Retry the upload — in most cases this is enough.
  • Close any files you're trying to upload if they're still open in another application.
  • Move your files to your local drive if they're on an external hard drive, USB stick, or cloud folder.
  • Zip your files before uploading, especially if you're sending multiple files — this reduces the risk of individual files being accessed by background processes during upload.
