Antivirus and security software can actively block WeTransfer from connecting, causing uploads and downloads to fail. Updating your software or temporarily disabling it is the best way to test this.
Why this happens
Security software works by intercepting connections it doesn't recognise or trust. When it flags WeTransfer, it can block uploads or downloads entirely — not because WeTransfer is harmful, but because the software is being overly cautious. WeTransfer can't be written to work around security software, because bypassing security tools is exactly what malicious software does.
Update your antivirus first
Security software updates frequently, and a newer version may already have resolved any conflict with WeTransfer. Not all antivirus software updates automatically, so check manually.
Known software conflicts
- Avast — the web shield feature is known to interfere with WeTransfer.
- Bitdefender — can disable WeTransfer's service entirely in some configurations.
- HTTP scanning or proxy features in various security tools can intercept and block our upload requests.
Test by disabling
If your software is up to date and uploads are still failing, temporarily disable your antivirus, firewall, or VPN one at a time to identify which is causing the issue. Re-enable after testing. If disabling resolves the issue, check the software's settings for an exception or allowlist feature and add WeTransfer's domains there.
