If you've received complaints or comments from your contacts over a suspicious file transfer sent from your address using WeTransfer, it's possible your email account has been compromised.
How this can happen
To successfully send an email transfer via our platform, a verification code is required — it's sent exclusively to the relevant email inbox. So if a malicious transfer has been sent using your address without your knowledge, someone else may have access to your email account or computer.
Email accounts can be compromised in many ways. If you've inadvertently provided your email credentials to a malicious site, or downloaded malware unknowingly when browsing the web, this can lead to unauthorized access to your inbox. Malware exists in many forms — invasive pop-ups, fake ads, phishing emails, phishing websites.
Secure your email account
- One of the most effective measures is to enable 2-Factor Authentication on your email account. Refer to your email provider's documentation to set it up.
- If you've been infected by more sophisticated malware, a hard factory reset of your computer may be needed.
Block your address from being used on WeTransfer
In case of a compromised account, we can block your email address entirely — meaning your address cannot be used to send transfers on our service. We can remove blocks on email addresses at any time. Contact our Support Team to request this.
