WeTransfer handles any file type without modification, including DICOM-adjacent exports, high-resolution medical images, PDF reports, audio recordings, video consultations, ZIP archives, and Office documents. Files are sent in their original quality with no re-encoding or resolution loss, so what your client receives is identical to what you uploaded. Folder uploads preserve the original file structure, which is useful when delivering organized patient record packages or multi-part clinical documentation.
You can restrict access to a transfer by specifying one or more email addresses, so only those exact contacts can open the files after verifying their identity. For an additional layer of security, you can also lock any transfer behind a password, which you share with the recipient separately outside of WeTransfer. These controls can be set before sending and adjusted afterward from your Transfers panel, giving you ongoing control over who has access.
Yes. Recipients can open images, PDFs, video, and audio directly in their browser without downloading anything first, which is practical when a client wants to confirm they have the right files before committing to a full download. Previews display at a slightly lower resolution than the original, so the full-quality file is only transferred when the client actively chooses to download. Clients can also leave comments on individual files in the preview, which keeps feedback in one place rather than scattered across email.
Download tracking, when enabled by the sender, shows you who downloaded a transfer and exactly when. For email transfers, a checkmark appears next to each recipient's address once they complete the download, with a precise timestamp on hover. For transfers with restricted access, you receive a detailed notification each time someone accesses the files. This means you can follow up with a client at a natural, well-timed moment rather than sending a blind chase.
WeTransfer encrypts files in transit using TLS and at rest using AES-256, stores data on AWS servers in EU data centers, and is ISO 27001 certified and GDPR-compliant. Files are never viewed, sold, or used to train AI models, and WeTransfer does not retain copies once a transfer expires. For business use, Data Processing Agreements are available on paid plans. Transfers also benefit from automated malware scanning on Ultimate and above, adding another layer of protection before files reach your client.
