No. WeTransfer sends files in their original format without re-encoding, compressing, or modifying them in any way. Your DWG, DXF, STEP, IGES, or any other CAD format lands on the recipient's machine exactly as it left yours, with all layers, assemblies, and metadata intact. When you upload multiple files, WeTransfer packages them into a lossless ZIP that does not alter the individual files inside.
Yes. WeTransfer supports full folder uploads, and recipients download the contents with the original folder hierarchy preserved. This makes it straightforward to send a complete project package, where drawing files, reference models, and supporting documents are all organized exactly as they are on your machine.
When you upload, click the icon in the transfer window to switch to link mode before hitting Transfer. Once the upload finishes, WeTransfer generates a unique URL you can copy and share via email, Slack, a project management tool, or anywhere else. Anyone who receives the link can click it and download directly from their browser without signing up.
You can add a password to the transfer before sharing so only people who know it can download the files. Alternatively, you can restrict access to a specific list of email addresses, meaning anyone outside that list is blocked even if they have the link. Both options can be set before you send or adjusted later from your Transfers panel.
On the Free plan, links stay active for up to 3 days. If you need a link to remain available for longer, including indefinitely, that is available on Ultimate and above, where you can set a custom expiry or choose no expiry at all. Ultimate also lets you recover transfers that have already expired, which is useful if a contractor comes back to a project weeks later and needs the original files again.
