Files are sent with no compression and no re-encoding, so a radiology export or a multi-gigabyte diagnostic archive arrives exactly as it left your system. Recipients can preview supported formats, including PDFs and videos, directly in the browser before downloading, which helps clinical staff confirm the right file landed without committing to a full download first.
You can lock any transfer with a password, and only recipients who know that password can access the files. For tighter control, the restricted access option lets you specify individual email addresses, so only people on your list can download after verifying their identity. These options are available on all plans and can also be applied or updated after a transfer has already been sent, which is useful when access needs change during a review or approval process.
No account is needed on the recipient's side. Anyone you send a transfer to can open the download link and access the files directly in their browser, which matters in healthcare when you're working with external labs, referring clinicians, regulatory bodies, or partner agencies who may not use WeTransfer themselves. Sending a transfer does require a free WeTransfer account on your end.
WeTransfer's download tracking lets you see who downloaded your files and when, once you enable it on a transfer. For email transfers, a checkmark appears next to each recipient's address once they download, and you can hover over it to see the exact date and time. This removes the back-and-forth of chasing confirmation emails when a submission deadline or a handoff to a clinical team is time-sensitive.
Free accounts include up to 3 GB per transfer and up to 10 transfers per rolling 30-day window, with links expiring after a maximum of 3 days. WeTransfer Ultimate removes the per-transfer size cap entirely, supports unlimited transfers, and lets you set a custom expiry or keep transfers available indefinitely. Ultimate also adds the ability to recover transfers even after they have expired, including ones that expired before you upgraded, which is valuable when you need to retrieve a past submission or revisit archived clinical files.
