Every transfer is encrypted with TLS while in transit and AES-256 at rest, and files are stored on AWS servers in EU data centers in Ireland. WeTransfer is ISO 27001 certified and fully GDPR-compliant, and Data Processing Agreements are available for business plan customers who need them for regulatory or contractual purposes. On top of that, you can add a password to any transfer and restrict access to a specific list of verified email addresses so only named recipients can open the files.
Yes. When you create a transfer, you can enable download tracking, which captures the name and email address of anyone who downloads the files along with the exact date and time. For stricter control, the Restricted Access option limits downloads to a defined list of email addresses and generates a detailed notification each time someone on that list opens the transfer. Both options are available on all plans and must be explicitly turned on by the sender.
WeTransfer works with any file type, so PDFs, Excel workbooks, Word documents, PowerPoint decks, CSV exports, ZIP archives, and any proprietary audit or financial software outputs can all be sent without special handling. Files are transferred in their original format with no compression or alteration, meaning every formula, annotation, and embedded attachment arrives exactly as it left your machine. Recipients can preview PDFs, Word documents, spreadsheets, and presentations directly in the browser before deciding whether to download.
A shared workspace on Teams or Enterprise brings all team members under centralized billing and gives admins visibility over every transfer sent or received within the workspace, which is useful for internal oversight and client-matter tracking. Members each work from their own account, so there is no mixing of client files, and admins can add or remove people as engagements change. Enterprise goes further with SSO, SCIM provisioning, custom transfer rules, usage logs with SIEM integration, and advanced access management, covering the governance requirements most audit and consulting firms operate under.
Recipients never need a WeTransfer account to download or preview a transfer. They click the download link or open the email notification and access the files directly. If you have enabled Restricted Access, they will need to verify their email address to confirm their identity, but no account creation is required. This makes it straightforward to share deliverables with clients, regulators, or third-party advisors without asking them to set up anything on their end.
