Recover your expired video footage transfer

A transfer link going dark does not automatically mean your video footage is gone. WeTransfer separates link expiry from permanent deletion, so footage from expired transfers may still be sitting on WeTransfer's servers, ready to restore. Ultimate subscribers can bring it back from the Transfers panel or directly from the expired download page, no re-upload needed.

Video footage is heavy to re-shoot and heavy to re-upload, which makes losing access to a transfer link a bigger deal than it sounds. For most transfers, expiry and deletion are two different events: when a link stops working, the footage behind it can remain in a recoverable state for a window of time afterward. WeTransfer Ultimate subscribers can restore expired transfers from their Transfers panel, and anyone who still has the original link may also trigger a restore from the expired download experience when signed in with an eligible plan. If you sent footage while on a Free or Starter account, upgrading to Ultimate within the retention window can unlock recovery on those older transfers too. Free and Starter users cannot self-restore, but files are not necessarily wiped the moment a link expires.

FAQs

Go to your Transfers panel and look for the expired transfer in your list. If the transfer was set to recoverable (the default for most transfers) and you're on Ultimate, Teams, or Enterprise, you'll see a recover or restore option next to it. The recovery window runs for up to one year for footage files under 256 MB and up to 90 days for files over 256 MB, so acting quickly matters for larger video files.

Yes. Someone holding the original expired download link can trigger a restore from the expired download experience, as long as they're logged in with a plan that includes recovery, such as Ultimate. This extends the download window again without requiring the sender to re-upload anything. It's a separate path from the sender's Transfers panel, so either party can kick off the process.

Not necessarily. Free and Starter users cannot self-restore an expired transfer, but link expiry and permanent server deletion are not the same event. Files often remain in a recoverable state on WeTransfer's servers for a period after the link stops working. If you upgrade to Ultimate before that window closes, those transfers may become restorable from your Transfers panel right away, including footage sent before you upgraded.

No. WeTransfer sends and stores files in their original quality with no re-encoding or resolution loss, including 4K footage. Recovery restores access to the same files that were originally uploaded, so your footage comes back exactly as it was sent, frame for frame.

WeTransfer Ultimate lets you set a custom expiry date on any transfer or choose to keep it available indefinitely, with no fixed deadline. You can adjust the expiry on active transfers at any time from the Transfers panel without re-uploading. For ongoing work like rushes, edits, or client deliveries, that kind of flexibility removes the pressure of chasing down expired links altogether.
