Spreadsheets hold work that is hard to recreate: budget models, project trackers, data exports built over hours. When the download link to one of those transfers goes dark, it is easy to assume the files are gone, but that is rarely the whole story. WeTransfer treats the moment a link expires as separate from the moment files leave its servers, and for most transfers, a recovery window opens right after expiry. WeTransfer Ultimate subscribers can restore expired transfers directly from their Transfers panel, and anyone who still has the original expired link can also trigger a restore from the expired download page when logged in with an eligible plan. Transfers created before you upgraded to Ultimate are included in recovery, so spreadsheets sent while you were on a Free or Starter account may already be restorable once your plan changes. Free and Starter users cannot self-restore after a link expires, but that does not mean files are wiped from WeTransfer's servers the instant a link goes dark.

Not necessarily. When a transfer expires on a Free or Starter account, the download link stops working, but the files are not always immediately and permanently removed from WeTransfer's servers. A retention window follows expiry, and if you upgrade to Ultimate before that window closes, those transfers may become restorable from your Transfers panel. Free and Starter users cannot self-restore, but upgrading in time can still bring your spreadsheets back.


Go to your Transfers panel, find the expired transfer, and look for the Recover or Restore option next to it. This works for transfers that were marked recoverable when sent, which is the default setting. Transfers you sent before upgrading to Ultimate are also eligible, so older spreadsheet transfers dispatched from a Free or Starter account may already appear there ready to restore.


Yes, in some cases. When someone opens an expired download link and is logged in with a WeTransfer plan that includes recovery, they may be able to trigger a restore directly from the expired download page, extending the download window again without anyone needing to re-upload the files. The transfer must have been set to recoverable when it was sent, which is the default.


Expiry means the download link stops working for recipients, but the files behind it often remain on WeTransfer's servers in a recoverable state for a window afterward. Permanent deletion happens later, once that retention window closes, or immediately if the sender manually deletes the transfer from their Transfers panel. That manual delete is a distinct action from time-based expiry and cannot be undone.


WeTransfer Ultimate lets you set a custom expiry or choose to keep a transfer available indefinitely, so your Excel, Google Sheets exports, or CSV files stay accessible for as long as you need. You can adjust the expiry date of an active transfer at any time from your Transfers panel, and you can also re-send the download link to recipients without re-uploading the files.
