Instead of treating expiry as permanent, Ultimate holds expired transfers in a recoverable state so you can restore them straight from your account without re-uploading anything. What catches many people off guard is that this works retroactively — spreadsheets you sent before upgrading to Ultimate may already be restorable the moment your plan activates. On Free and Starter plans, there is no recovery path once a transfer expires, so upgrading to Ultimate is the only way to keep that option available.

Yes — recovery on Ultimate works retroactively. Spreadsheets you sent while on a Free or Starter plan may already be waiting to be restored the moment your Ultimate plan activates. Open your Transfers panel, find the expired transfer, and if recovery is available you will see a Recover or Restore option next to it.
The window depends on file size. Spreadsheet files under 256 MB can be recovered for up to one year after expiry. Files over 256 MB have a 90-day recovery window. After those periods, files are permanently removed from WeTransfer's servers and cannot be restored by anyone.
Yes. WeTransfer never alters your files during transfer or recovery — no compression, no reformatting, no changes to formulas or formatting. Your XLS, XLSX, CSV, or ODS file comes back byte-for-byte as you originally uploaded it.
Not really. On Ultimate, the Recoverable option is switched on by default for every new transfer, so your spreadsheets are protected without any extra setup. You can verify or adjust this in the transfer settings panel before clicking Transfer.
On Ultimate, yes. You can set a custom expiry date or choose to keep a transfer active indefinitely from the transfer settings, either before sending or afterwards from the Transfers panel. Free and Starter plans cap expiry at three days, with no option to extend.
