Recover an expired file transfer in retail

When a WeTransfer download link stops working, that is not the same as losing the files behind it. WeTransfer separates link expiry from permanent file deletion, and WeTransfer Ultimate gives both the person who sent the transfer and the person holding the expired link a genuine path to getting those files back.

Retail moves fast, and the files that support it, whether product photography, supplier price lists, seasonal campaign assets, or planogram layouts, are rarely quick to recreate. When a WeTransfer link goes dark, the transfer has expired but the files may still be on WeTransfer's servers in a recoverable state, because expiry and permanent deletion are two distinct events. Transfers are marked recoverable by default, which means there is a window after the link stops working during which files can be restored. WeTransfer Ultimate subscribers can recover expired transfers directly from their Transfers panel, and that includes transfers that were originally sent on a Free or Starter account, as long as the retention window remains open. If you are the one who received the files and still have the original link, signing in with an eligible plan from the expired download page may restore your access without anyone needing to start the upload again.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

Not necessarily. When a transfer expires on WeTransfer, the download link stops working but the files themselves are not always immediately and permanently removed from WeTransfer's servers. Transfers that are marked recoverable, which is the default unless the sender turns it off, remain in a restorable state for an extended period after expiry. Free and Starter senders cannot self-restore, but if the retention window is still open, upgrading to WeTransfer Ultimate may still allow recovery before the files are permanently deleted.

If you sent the transfer, go to your Transfers panel in your WeTransfer account and look for the expired transfer. If the transfer was marked recoverable and the retention window has not closed, you will see an option to restore it there. This works even if the transfer was originally sent while you were on a Free or Starter account, as long as you are now on WeTransfer Ultimate or above and the window is still open.

If you still have the original expired link, you may be able to restore access directly from the expired download page by signing in with a WeTransfer account on a plan that includes recovery, such as Ultimate. This can restore the download window without the original sender needing to re-upload anything. If that option is not available, reaching out to the sender so they can restore from their Transfers panel is the next step.

WeTransfer handles any file type without compression, including high-resolution product photography, video campaign footage, CAD or 3D files for store fixtures, PDFs, Office documents, design files, and ZIP archives. File type does not affect whether a transfer is recoverable, but transfer size does influence how long files stay in the recoverable window after expiry, so larger transfers have a shorter restoration period.

WeTransfer Ultimate lets you set a custom expiry for each transfer or keep it active indefinitely, so a campaign asset pack destined for a print supplier will not quietly disappear in the middle of a product launch. You can also adjust the expiry date of an active transfer at any time from your Transfers panel, and send the updated link directly to recipients. For teams coordinating across multiple retail locations or supplier contacts, the Teams plan adds shared storage and centralized management.
