An expired link on a RAW photo transfer is not the end of the road. WeTransfer separates link expiry from permanent file deletion, and both senders and recipients may have a recovery path open to them, depending on their plan and how much time has passed.

RAW files from a shoot carry information that cannot be recreated, so landing on a dead transfer link is worth investigating carefully before you assume the worst. WeTransfer marks most transfers as recoverable by default, meaning the download link going dark and the files being permanently removed are two distinct events with a gap between them. WeTransfer Ultimate subscribers can restore expired RAW photo transfers directly from their Transfers panel, and this includes transfers that were originally sent under a Free or Starter account before any upgrade happened. If you were on the receiving end and still have the original expired link, you may also be able to trigger a recovery from the expired download page when signed in with an eligible plan. Free and Starter users cannot self-restore once a link expires, but an expired link on its own is not confirmation that those RAW files have been wiped from WeTransfer's servers.

Not necessarily. When a transfer is set to recoverable (the default unless the sender turned it off), an expired download link does not mean WeTransfer has immediately deleted the files from its servers. Free and Starter users cannot self-restore, but the underlying RAW files may still be sitting in a recoverable state. Upgrading to WeTransfer Ultimate within that window can still make recovery possible, even for transfers sent before you upgrade.


Log into your WeTransfer account, go to your Transfers panel, and find the expired transfer. If recovery is available, you will see a restore option next to the transfer. This works on WeTransfer Ultimate, and it covers transfers sent before you upgraded, so older RAW shoots from a Free or Starter period may still be restorable if you act before the retention window closes.


Yes, in some cases. If you open the expired download link and you are logged in with a WeTransfer plan that includes recovery, you may be able to trigger a restore directly from the expired download page, extending your access without any re-upload from the sender. This option depends on the transfer still being within its retention window and the recoverable setting not having been disabled by the sender.


WeTransfer supports a wide range of RAW formats including ARW (Sony), NEF (Nikon), CR2 and CR3 (Canon), DNG (Adobe), RAF (Fujifilm), RW2 (Panasonic), and ORF (Olympus), among others. Any RAW transfer marked as recoverable follows the same retention and recovery rules as other transfers, so the format itself does not affect whether files can be restored.


WeTransfer Ultimate lets you set a custom expiry on any transfer, including the option to keep it active indefinitely until you choose to delete it. That means no more checking whether a link is still live before handing it to a client or art director. You can adjust the expiry date of an active transfer at any time from your Transfers panel, even after the transfer has already been sent.
