Recover your expired photo transfer links

An expired link doesn't mean your photos are gone. WeTransfer keeps expired transfers in a recoverable state by default, so images you shared — whether you're a photographer delivering a shoot or someone who sent a batch of family photos — can often be restored without re-uploading a single file.

Get your expired files back

If you've clicked an old photo transfer link and found it no longer works, the pictures behind it may still be within reach. WeTransfer transfers are recoverable by default, meaning expiry stops the download link from working but doesn't immediately erase the files from WeTransfer's servers. Upgrading to Ultimate unlocks the ability to restore expired photo transfers directly from your Transfers panel, including shoots and image batches you sent back when you were on a Free or Starter account. Someone on the receiving end who still has the link can also trigger a restore from the expired download page when logged in with an eligible plan, extending access again without the sender needing to re-upload. Free and Starter accounts can't self-restore after expiry, but files aren't necessarily gone the instant the link stops working — there's a retention window before permanent deletion, and upgrading to Ultimate in time can still make them recoverable.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

Not necessarily. When a transfer expires, the download link stops working, but WeTransfer keeps the files in a recoverable state for a window after expiry — up to one year for files under 256 MB, or up to 90 days for files over 256 MB. Permanent deletion only happens once that retention window closes, or if you manually delete the transfer from your Transfers panel. So if your photos are still within that window, they may be restorable.

Yes, recovery on Ultimate works retroactively. If you sent a photo transfer while on a Free or Starter plan and then upgraded to Ultimate, those older transfers may already appear as restorable in your Transfers panel, as long as they're still within the retention window. You don't need to have been on Ultimate when you originally sent the files.

Log into your account and go to the Transfers panel. Find the expired transfer in your Sent list — if it's still within the recovery window, you'll see an option to restore it. Clicking that brings the transfer back without any re-uploading. The original photos come back exactly as they were sent, at full resolution with no re-compression.

Both paths exist. Senders can restore from the Transfers panel in their account. A recipient who still has the original download link can also trigger a restore directly from the expired download page, as long as they're logged in with an Ultimate, Teams, or Enterprise plan. Restoring from that page extends the download window again, so the photos become accessible without the original sender needing to act.

Yes. WeTransfer never re-encodes or compresses image files during transfer or recovery. Whether you originally sent JPEGs, RAW files, TIFFs, or PSDs, the restored files come back bit-for-bit identical to what was uploaded. There's no resolution loss, color shift, or quality degradation involved in the recovery process.
