An expired download link doesn't mean your PDFs are gone for good. WeTransfer Ultimate keeps expired transfers in a recoverable state, so documents, contracts, and design files sent as PDFs can be restored from your Transfers panel, including transfers sent back when you were on a Free or Starter plan.
Get your expired files back
Finding a dead link to a PDF you still need, whether it's a signed contract, a client brief, or a finished design proof, is frustrating. WeTransfer Ultimate holds expired transfers in a recoverable state, so you can restore them directly from your Transfers panel without asking anyone to resend. People trying to download from an expired link can also trigger a restore themselves when logged in with an eligible plan, so recovery isn't limited to the sender. If you sent PDFs before upgrading, those transfers may already be waiting to be restored the moment your plan changes. Free and Starter plans cannot self-restore after expiry, but that doesn't mean the files are instantly wiped — upgrading to Ultimate during the retention window can still make them recoverable.

All your questions answered.
Not necessarily. When a transfer expires, the download link stops working, but WeTransfer holds recoverable transfers in a restorable state for an extended window after expiry before any permanent deletion happens. If the Recoverable option was on when the transfer was sent (it's the default), an Ultimate subscriber can restore it from the Transfers panel. Free and Starter users can't self-restore, but upgrading to Ultimate during that window still opens the door.
Both paths exist. The sender can restore from their Transfers panel on Ultimate. But if the recipient still has the original link, they can also trigger a restore from the expired download experience when logged in with a plan that includes recovery, extending the download window again without any re-upload needed.
Log in, go to your Transfers panel, and find the expired transfer. If it's still within its recovery window and was sent with the Recoverable option enabled, you'll see a restore option next to it. Select it, and the transfer becomes active again — no re-uploading the PDF or recreating the link.
Possibly, yes. Recovery on Ultimate is retroactive, so transfers you sent before upgrading may still be restorable if they're within the retention window and were sent with recoverability enabled. PDFs under 256 MB can be recovered for up to one year after expiry; larger files have a window of up to 90 days. Upgrading to Ultimate while those files are still within their window is the only way to restore them.
The file comes back exactly as it was sent. WeTransfer never re-encodes, re-compresses, or alters files during upload, storage, or recovery. Your PDF, whether it's a finalized contract, a print-ready layout, or a multi-page presentation, will be identical to the original on the other end.
