Recover your expired PDF transfer link

Sending a PDF and losing the link to expiry is more common than you'd think. WeTransfer Ultimate keeps expired transfers in a recoverable state, so your PDFs stay within reach even after the download link goes dark — including transfers that expired before you ever upgraded.

Losing access to a PDF transfer is particularly frustrating when the document took time to prepare: contracts, portfolios, proposals, or presentations that aren't easy to recreate. WeTransfer Ultimate gives you a recovery path for expired transfers, accessible straight from your Transfers panel without re-uploading anything. What surprises most people is that the recovery window applies retroactively, meaning PDFs sent while you were on a Free or Starter plan could still be retrievable the moment you upgrade. On Free and Starter, there is no recovery option at all once a transfer expires — those files are permanently removed from WeTransfer's servers. Ultimate's Recoverable option is enabled by default on every new transfer, so your PDFs are protected without any extra steps on your part.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

It depends on the plan the transfer was sent on. Free and Starter transfers are permanently deleted from WeTransfer's servers once they expire, with no recovery path. If you're on Ultimate, you can restore the expired PDF directly from your Transfers panel, as long as it falls within the recovery window.

The recovery window depends on file size. PDFs under 256 MB can be recovered for up to one year after expiry. PDFs over 256 MB have a 90-day recovery window. Both windows are measured from the moment the transfer expired, not from when it was originally sent.

Yes, the recovery window applies retroactively. If the transfer is still within the recovery window at the time you upgrade, you can restore it from your Transfers panel even though it was sent on a Free or Starter plan. It's worth upgrading sooner rather than later, since the clock is running from the expiry date.

Log in to your Ultimate account, go to your Transfers panel, and find the expired transfer. If it's still within the recovery window, you'll see a Recover or Restore option next to it. Click that, and the transfer comes back online with a fresh download link you can share again.

On WeTransfer Ultimate, you can set a custom expiry when sending or keep transfers active indefinitely by choosing no expiry date at all. Free and Starter transfers always expire after a maximum of three days. Setting your PDFs to never expire removes the risk of a dead link entirely, and you can adjust or remove the expiry on any active transfer from your Transfers panel at any time.
