In news and media, a transfer carrying raw footage, broadcast-ready packages, or press assets does not quietly expire without consequences. WeTransfer Ultimate keeps expired transfers recoverable from your Transfers panel, including files you sent before you had an Ultimate account.
Get your expired files back
Chasing down a source re-upload or re-exporting broadcast files from scratch is not a workflow any newsroom should depend on. WeTransfer Ultimate gives you a direct recovery path for expired transfers, letting you restore them from your own account without involving the original sender. That recovery extends retroactively, so media assets you sent while on a Free or Starter account may already be waiting the moment you upgrade. Every file comes back exactly as it was packaged, whether that is a folder of high-resolution stills, a multi-clip video bundle, or a layered audio mix for post-production, with nothing re-encoded or altered. Free and Starter accounts offer no recovery option once a transfer expires, making Ultimate the only plan that keeps that path open for media professionals working under deadline.

All your questions answered.
Go to your Transfers panel, find the expired transfer, and if it is within the recovery window you will see a Recover or Restore option next to it. This works on WeTransfer Ultimate and above. If the option is not visible, the transfer is outside its recovery window and the files have been permanently deleted from WeTransfer's servers.
Yes, recovery on Ultimate is retroactive. Transfers you sent on a Free or Starter account may already be eligible the moment you upgrade, as long as they are still within the recovery window. Files smaller than 256 MB can be recovered for up to one year after expiry; files larger than 256 MB can be recovered for up to 90 days after expiry.
On Ultimate, files under 256 MB are recoverable for up to one year after expiry, and files over 256 MB are recoverable for up to 90 days after expiry. Free and Starter accounts have no recovery window at all, so once those transfers expire the files are gone permanently.
Yes. WeTransfer does not re-encode, compress, or alter your files at any point in the transfer or recovery process. Recovered files come back in their original quality, with folder structures, file names, and any embedded metadata preserved exactly as packaged when you first sent them.
When creating a transfer, make sure the Recoverable option is enabled in your transfer settings. It is on by default for new transfers on Ultimate, but it is worth confirming before you send, especially for high-value deliverables like unedited footage or final broadcast packages. On Free and Starter, the Recoverable option is not available, so upgrading to Ultimate before sending is the only way to protect future transfers.
