Recover expired image transfer links

Losing access to a shared image link is frustrating, especially when the photos are hard to replace. WeTransfer Ultimate keeps expired transfers in a recoverable state, so your images aren't necessarily gone just because the download link stopped working.

Get your expired files back

When an image transfer expires on a Free or Starter plan, WeTransfer permanently removes those files from its servers, and there is no way to bring them back. Ultimate changes the situation entirely: expired image transfers stay in a recoverable state, and you can restore them from your Transfers panel without re-uploading a single file. The recovery window even applies retroactively, so images you shared before upgrading may still be reachable the moment you move to Ultimate. WeTransfer sends images in their original quality with no compression or resolution loss, meaning any photo or design file you recover comes back exactly as you sent it. The Recoverable option is enabled by default on new Ultimate transfers, giving every image you send a built-in safety net.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

Free and Starter plan transfers are permanently deleted from WeTransfer's servers once they expire, with no recovery path available. The only exception is if you upgrade to Ultimate: the recovery window applies retroactively, so images sent while you were on Free or Starter may still be within reach after you upgrade, provided they fall within the recovery window for their file size.

The recovery window depends on file size. Image files under 256 MB can be recovered for up to one year after expiry. Files over 256 MB have a 90-day recovery window. Both windows are counted from the moment the transfer expired, not from when you upgraded your plan.

Head to your Transfers panel and look for the expired transfer in your sent list. If the transfer is still within its recovery window, you'll see a Recover or Restore option next to it. Clicking that brings the transfer back and reactivates the download link, without any need to re-upload your images.

Yes. WeTransfer never compresses or re-encodes files, so recovered images are identical to what you originally sent, whether that's a high-resolution JPEG, a RAW file, or a layered PSD. The recovery process simply reactivates the transfer rather than processing the files again.

On WeTransfer Ultimate, the Recoverable option is turned on by default for every new transfer, so your images already have a safety net without any extra setup. You can confirm this is active in the transfer settings before sending. You can also set transfers to never expire on Ultimate, which means the download link stays live indefinitely unless you choose to delete it.
