A broken transfer link does not automatically mean the files behind it are gone. WeTransfer treats link expiry and permanent file removal as two separate things, and WeTransfer Ultimate gives both the person who sent the files and the person trying to download them a real path to getting those files back.
Get your expired files back
In hospitality, the files that move between teams, suppliers, and clients, such as branded menus, event layouts, photography from a recent shoot, or catering proposals, are often time-sensitive and not easy to recreate. When a WeTransfer link stops working, the transfer has expired but the underlying files may still be sitting on WeTransfer's servers in a recoverable state. By default, transfers are marked recoverable, which means there is a window after expiry during which the files can be restored, not just a hard cutoff the moment the link goes dark. WeTransfer Ultimate subscribers can restore expired transfers straight from their Transfers panel, and this applies to transfers originally sent under a Free or Starter account too, provided that window has not closed. If you are the one who received the files and still have the original link, signing in with an eligible plan on the expired download page may also open a recovery path without anyone needing to start the upload again.

WeTransfer separates link expiry from permanent file removal, so an expired link means the download stopped working, not that the files were immediately wiped from WeTransfer's servers. If the transfer was marked recoverable when it was sent (the default behavior), the underlying files remain in a restorable state for an extended period after expiry. Whether recovery is still possible depends on how long ago the transfer expired and the size of the files involved, so acting sooner rather than later gives you the best chance.
If you are the sender and you have a WeTransfer Ultimate subscription, you can go to your Transfers panel, find the expired transfer in the list, and restore it from there if the recovery window is still open. This works even if the original transfer was sent while you were on a Free or Starter account, as long as you have upgraded to Ultimate before that window closes. Once restored, the download link becomes active again and you can share it with your recipients without re-uploading anything.
You may be able to. If you still have the original expired link, opening it and signing in with a WeTransfer plan that includes recovery can trigger a restore directly from the expired download experience. This means you do not always have to go back to the sender and ask for a re-upload, which is particularly useful when suppliers or photographers are busy between events. The option is available when the retention window for that transfer is still open.
WeTransfer handles any file type without compression, so branded menus, banquet event orders, high-resolution venue photography, promotional videos, audio for events, PDF contracts, and design files like those from Adobe InDesign or Illustrator all transfer in their original quality. File type does not affect whether a transfer is recoverable, though file size does influence the length of the recovery window, so larger files have a shorter window available after expiry.
WeTransfer Ultimate lets you set a custom expiry date on any transfer or keep it available indefinitely, which removes the risk of a link going dead before every party involved has had a chance to download. You can also enable malware scanning and restrict access to specific email addresses, useful when sharing rate agreements or sensitive event contracts with select clients. For teams coordinating across multiple properties or departments, the Teams plan adds shared storage and centralised management so everyone works from the same setup.
