Get back your expired folder transfer

Folder transfers on WeTransfer preserve your original directory structure, and an expired link does not automatically mean those folders are gone. WeTransfer Ultimate opens a restore path for senders and for anyone still holding the original expired link, so the work inside those folders is often still within reach.

Get your expired files back

Folders transferred through WeTransfer arrive with their structure intact, which makes losing access to the link more frustrating than losing a single file. When a transfer expires, the download link stops working, but that moment is not the same as permanent deletion: WeTransfer holds recoverable transfers in a restorable state after the link goes dark. Senders on WeTransfer Ultimate can restore expired folder transfers directly from their Transfers panel, and someone who still has the expired link may also be able to trigger a recovery from the expired download page when signed in with an eligible plan. Transfers sent before upgrading to Ultimate are included, so folder archives from a Free or Starter period may still be restorable if you act before the retention window closes. Free and Starter users cannot self-restore, but an expired link is not a guarantee the underlying files have been wiped.

FAQs

Not necessarily. Free plan transfers expire after three days, but link expiry and permanent deletion are not the same event. If the transfer was marked recoverable (the default), the folders and files inside stay in a restorable state on WeTransfer's servers for an extended window after the link stops working. Free and Starter users cannot self-restore, but upgrading to Ultimate before that retention window closes can make those folders recoverable without a re-upload.

Go to your Transfers panel, find the expired transfer, and look for the Recover or Restore option next to it. If the transfer is still within the recovery window, you can restore it there, which brings the download link back to life with the original folder structure intact. This works for transfers sent before you upgraded to Ultimate as well, so earlier sends from a Free or Starter account are included.

Yes, in some cases. When you open an expired download link, WeTransfer may show a recovery option directly in that experience if you are signed in with a plan that includes recovery, such as Ultimate. Successfully triggering a recovery from the expired link extends the download window again without the sender needing to re-upload the folders. If recovery is not available through that flow, asking the sender to restore from their Transfers panel is the next step.

WeTransfer preserves your folder hierarchy on upload, and recovery does not alter that. When a restored transfer becomes downloadable again, recipients get the same nested folder structure that was originally sent. Downloading multiple files or an entire folder produces a ZIP archive that, once extracted, reflects the original organization.

WeTransfer Ultimate lets you set a custom expiry on any transfer, including the option to keep it active indefinitely until you choose to delete it. Before uploading, select your preferred expiry from the transfer window; after sending, you can adjust it from the Transfers panel at any time. That way the link stays live for collaborators who need ongoing access to the folders inside.
