Finance and banking work runs on precision timing, and a dead transfer link for a loan pack, audit report, or compliance document can feel like a serious setback. When a WeTransfer link expires, file access stops, but that is a distinct event from the files being permanently deleted: recoverable transfers, which are on by default, remain in a restorable state on WeTransfer's servers for an extended period after the link stops working. WeTransfer Ultimate subscribers can restore expired transfers directly from their Transfers panel, including transfers that were originally sent from a Free or Starter account, as long as the retention window is still open. If you were the recipient and still have the original expired link, you may also be able to trigger a recovery from the expired download page when signed in with an eligible plan. Free and Starter users cannot self-restore, but an expired link alone is not proof that the underlying files have already been permanently removed.

Not automatically. When a Free or Starter transfer expires, the download link stops working, but the files are not always wiped from WeTransfer's servers at that exact moment. Recoverable transfers, which are enabled by default unless the sender turned that setting off, stay in a restorable state for an extended window after expiry. Free and Starter users cannot self-restore during that window, but upgrading to WeTransfer Ultimate before the window closes may still give you a path back to those files.


Sign in to your WeTransfer account, go to your Transfers panel, and locate the expired transfer. If recovery is available, you will see a Restore option. This path is open to WeTransfer Ultimate, Teams, and Enterprise subscribers, and it applies even to transfers that were originally sent under a Free or Starter account before you upgraded. Acting promptly matters because the recovery window is finite, with its length depending on the total size of the files in the transfer.


Possibly. If the person with the expired link is signed in to a WeTransfer account on an Ultimate, Teams, or Enterprise plan and opens the expired download page, they may be able to trigger a recovery there, extending the download window without requiring you to re-upload. This path depends on whether the transfer was marked recoverable and whether the retention window is still open, so the sooner they try, the better.


WeTransfer handles any file type without re-encoding or quality loss, so financial documents such as PDFs, Excel models, PowerPoint presentations, ZIP archives of statements, and scanned image files all transfer as-is. For firms with stricter security requirements, WeTransfer offers password protection and restricted access controls that limit downloads to a specified list of email addresses, alongside encryption in transit and at rest, ISO 27001 certification, and EU-based storage.


Yes. WeTransfer Ultimate lets you set a custom expiry or keep transfers active indefinitely, removing the three-day ceiling that applies to Free and Starter accounts. Recoverable transfers are the default setting, so any transfer you send stays in a restorable state after expiry for an extended window. Teams and Enterprise plans add shared storage, centralized billing, and admin visibility across the whole team, which can help finance departments keep control over who sent what and when.
