When a transfer link goes dead mid-project, it does not automatically mean your engineering files are gone. WeTransfer separates link expiry from permanent file removal, and WeTransfer Ultimate opens a recovery path for both the person who sent the transfer and the person who received it.
Get your expired files back
Engineering work depends on precise, often irreplaceable files, so a dead link to a CAD model, technical drawing, or simulation dataset demands a clear answer before anyone starts re-uploading. On WeTransfer, link expiry and permanent file deletion are distinct events: when a transfer expires, the download link stops working, but recoverable transfers remain in a restorable state on WeTransfer's servers for an extended period after that. Senders on WeTransfer Ultimate can restore expired transfers directly from their Transfers panel, and that includes transfers originally sent while on a Free or Starter account, provided the retention window is still open. If you were the recipient and still have the original expired link, you may also be able to trigger a recovery from the expired download experience when signed in with an eligible plan. Free and Starter accounts cannot self-restore, but an expired link alone is not proof the underlying files have been permanently removed.

All your questions answered.
Not necessarily. When a WeTransfer link expires, it stops working for download, but that is not the same moment files are permanently removed from WeTransfer's servers. Recoverable transfers, which are on by default, stay in a restorable state for an extended window after expiry, ranging from around 90 days for larger files to close to a year for smaller ones. Free and Starter users cannot self-restore, but if you upgrade to WeTransfer Ultimate before that retention window closes, those expired transfers may still be recoverable.
If you are on WeTransfer Ultimate, go to your Transfers panel, find the expired transfer, and look for the Recover or Restore option. This works even for transfers you sent before upgrading, as long as the retention window has not yet passed. If the option is not visible, the files have been permanently deleted and you will need to re-upload. It is worth checking sooner rather than later, especially for large engineering files where the retention window is shorter.
You may be able to, depending on your plan and how much time has passed. If you still have the original expired link and you are signed in to a WeTransfer account on Ultimate or above, the expired download page may offer you a recovery option that extends your download window without requiring a re-upload from the sender. This path is separate from the sender-initiated restore in the Transfers panel, so both sides have a potential route back.
WeTransfer handles virtually any file type without altering or re-encoding them, so CAD files, DWG and DXF drawings, BIM models, IFC files, PDFs, ZIP archives, large simulation datasets, and Office documents all transfer in their original quality. On WeTransfer Ultimate there is no per-transfer size cap, which suits the large file sizes common in engineering projects. Recovery eligibility follows the same rules regardless of file type, based on the transfer's size and how much time has passed since expiry.
WeTransfer Ultimate lets you set a custom expiry on any transfer, including keeping it active indefinitely until you choose to delete it. You can also adjust the expiry date of an active transfer at any time from your Transfers panel, which is useful when a project timeline shifts. For teams sharing engineering documentation across multiple people, WeTransfer Teams builds on those same controls and adds shared storage and centralized transfer management across up to 50 members.
