Engineering work generates files that are genuinely hard to recreate — CAD drawings, simulation outputs, technical specifications, and as-built documentation. WeTransfer Ultimate keeps expired transfers in a recoverable state so you can restore them directly from your Transfers panel, including files sent before you had an Ultimate account.
Get your expired files back
When an expired transfer link cuts off access to a finite element model, a set of P&ID diagrams, or a folder of test data, the cost is not just inconvenience — it is rework. WeTransfer Ultimate lets you restore expired transfers straight from your account, without tracking down the original sender or asking anyone to re-upload from a backup. Restoration is retroactive, so engineering transfers you sent on a Free or Starter account may already be waiting the moment you upgrade. Files come back exactly as they were packaged, folder structure intact, with no changes to file names, CAD geometry, or any embedded metadata your downstream tools depend on. Free and Starter accounts have no recovery option once a transfer expires, which makes Ultimate the only plan that keeps that path open.
Our features are designed to minimize how much of your data we — or anyone else — can access, so you can keep what's yours, yours.

All your questions answered.
Log into your WeTransfer account, go to the Transfers panel, and find the expired transfer. If recovery is available, you will see a Recover or Restore option next to it. This works for transfers you sent yourself, and on Ultimate you can also recover transfers sent to you by others, including ones that expired before you upgraded.
Yes, recovery on Ultimate is retroactive. Transfers you sent while on a Free or Starter account may already be available to restore as soon as you upgrade, provided they are still within the recovery window. Files smaller than 256 MB can be recovered for up to one year after expiry, and files larger than 256 MB for up to 90 days.
The recovery window depends on file size. Transfers containing files under 256 MB — such as PDFs, specifications, or smaller drawing exports — are recoverable for up to one year after expiry. Transfers with files over 256 MB, including large simulation datasets or BIM exports, are recoverable for up to 90 days. Once those windows close, the files are permanently deleted.
Yes. WeTransfer does not modify files at any point — no re-encoding, no compression, and no changes to file structure or metadata. A recovered transfer returns exactly as it was packaged, which means proprietary CAD formats, linked assemblies, and embedded engineering data are preserved just as they were when you originally sent them.
When creating a transfer on WeTransfer, the Recoverable option is enabled by default, so no extra steps are required in most cases. It is worth confirming this setting has not been switched off before sending large technical packages. On Ultimate, you can also set transfers to never expire, which removes the need for recovery altogether on critical project files.
