Get your expired education transfer back

When a transfer link stops working mid-semester or between departments, it does not automatically mean the files are gone. WeTransfer separates link expiry from permanent deletion, and WeTransfer Ultimate opens a real recovery path for both the person who sent the files and the person trying to download them.

Get your expired files back

Educators, students, and academic teams share everything from lecture recordings and research data to curriculum documents and design portfolios, so a dead transfer link at the wrong moment can interrupt genuine work. On WeTransfer, transfers are marked recoverable by default, which means the link going dark and the files being permanently removed are two different events with a meaningful gap between them. WeTransfer Ultimate subscribers can restore expired transfers straight from their Transfers panel, and that includes transfers originally sent on a Free or Starter account, provided the retention window is still open. Someone on the receiving end who still has the original expired link may also be able to trigger a recovery from the expired download page, as long as they are signed in with an eligible plan. Free and Starter users cannot self-restore, but an expired link alone is not proof that the underlying files have been wiped from WeTransfer's servers.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

Not necessarily. When a transfer expires, the download link stops working, but WeTransfer does not immediately and permanently delete the files from its servers. Recoverable transfers, which are enabled by default, remain in a restorable state for an extended window after expiry. If the student is on WeTransfer Ultimate, they can restore the transfer from their Transfers panel. If you still have the expired link and are signed in with an eligible plan, you may also be able to trigger a recovery from the expired download page without asking them to re-upload.

Log in to your WeTransfer account and go to your Transfers panel. If the transfer is still within its recovery window and was marked recoverable when you sent it, you will see a restore option next to the expired transfer. WeTransfer Ultimate includes expired transfer recovery, and it covers transfers that were originally sent under a Free or Starter account too, so upgrading to Ultimate before the retention window closes can still give you access back.

Yes. WeTransfer sends any file type without altering or re-encoding it, so lecture recordings, 4K presentations, audio files, PDFs, design work, and archived project folders all transfer in their original quality. On WeTransfer Ultimate there is no per-transfer size cap, which makes it practical for sending large course packages or entire semester bundles at once.

WeTransfer Ultimate lets you set a custom expiry on any transfer, including choosing no expiry at all so the link stays active indefinitely. Transfers are also recoverable by default, so even if you do set an expiry, the files remain in a restorable state after the link stops working. For a department or institution sharing files regularly, the Teams plan adds shared storage and centralized billing on top of those same controls.

Yes. When you create a link transfer on WeTransfer, there is no cap on how many people can use that link to download the files. You can share it via a learning management system, email, or any other channel and all recipients can access it. If you prefer tighter control, you can enable restricted access so only specific email addresses can open the transfer.
