Expired document links catch you off guard at the worst possible moment. WeTransfer Ultimate keeps those transfers in a recoverable state, so you can retrieve your documents from the Transfers panel rather than asking the sender to start over. Recovery even reaches back to documents sent before you were on Ultimate.
Get your expired files back
When a document transfer expires, the consequences depend entirely on which plan sent it. With WeTransfer Ultimate, expired document transfers stay retrievable for a defined period after expiry, and you can restore them with a few clicks directly from your account. That applies retroactively too: contracts, briefs, PDFs, or Office files sent while you were on Free or Starter may still be recoverable the moment you upgrade. The Recoverable option is enabled by default on new Ultimate transfers, meaning every document you send already has a safety net without any extra configuration. Free and Starter users have no recovery option at all once a transfer expires, and those files are permanently removed from WeTransfer's servers.
Our features are designed to minimize how much of your data we — or anyone else — can access, so you can keep what's yours, yours.

All your questions answered.
Yes. WeTransfer Ultimate keeps expired transfers in a recoverable state for up to one year after expiry for files under 256 MB, and up to 90 days for files over 256 MB. That covers most document types, including PDFs, Word files, spreadsheets, and presentations. You can restore them directly from your Transfers panel as long as you're within the recovery window.
Possibly, yes. The recovery window on WeTransfer Ultimate applies retroactively, so document transfers that expired while you were on a Free or Starter plan may still be within reach after you upgrade. Whether a specific file is recoverable depends on how long ago it expired and its file size, but it's worth checking your Transfers panel immediately after upgrading to see what's available.
On Free and Starter plans, once a transfer expires the files are permanently removed from WeTransfer's servers with no recovery path. There are no exceptions, regardless of file type or size. If the document is gone, the only option is to re-upload and send a new transfer.
Open your Transfers panel and locate the expired transfer. If recovery is available, you'll see a Recover or Restore option next to it. Select it to bring the transfer back and generate a new download link. If no recovery option appears, the transfer is outside its recovery window and the files have been permanently deleted.
Not really. The Recoverable option is turned on by default for every new transfer on WeTransfer Ultimate, so documents you send are already covered without any extra setup. If you want to double-check, you can confirm the setting is active in the transfer options panel before sending. Recipients can also preview documents in-browser before downloading, which reduces the pressure on any single download link.
