An expired link doesn't have to mean the end of the road for your documents. WeTransfer Ultimate keeps expired transfers in a recoverable state, so contracts, PDFs, and presentation files can be restored from your Transfers panel without asking anyone to resend a thing.
Get your expired files back
If a document transfer link has stopped working, the files themselves may still be on WeTransfer's servers waiting to be restored. WeTransfer Ultimate lets you bring expired transfers back to life directly from your Transfers panel, no re-uploading required. Recovery even reaches back in time: documents you sent before you were on Ultimate, including transfers originally made on a Free or Starter plan, may already be restorable the moment your plan changes. Someone on the receiving end who still has the original link can also trigger a restore through the expired download page when they're logged in with an eligible plan. Free and Starter accounts cannot self-restore after a link expires, but files aren't necessarily wiped from servers at that exact moment, and upgrading to Ultimate within the retention window may still get them back.

All your questions answered.
Possibly, yes. When a transfer expires on a Free or Starter plan, the download link stops working, but WeTransfer does not always delete the files from its servers at that instant. Files stay in a recoverable state for a retention window — up to about one year for documents under 256 MB, or up to about 90 days for larger files. Upgrading to Ultimate during that window gives you access to the restore option in your Transfers panel, so the sooner you upgrade after expiry, the better your chances.
Head to your Transfers panel and look for the expired transfer in your Sent list. If the transfer is still within its recovery window and you're on Ultimate, Teams, or Enterprise, you'll see a Recover or Restore option next to it. Clicking that brings the transfer back without any re-uploading. If you're the recipient and you still have the original link, you can also trigger a restore from the expired download page itself when logged in with an eligible plan.
Nothing changes about the files themselves. WeTransfer sends and stores documents in their original format with no compression or modification, so a recovered PDF, Word file, or presentation comes back exactly as it was sent. The restored transfer gets a fresh download window, giving your recipient access again without you needing to re-upload or resend anything.
Yes, on Ultimate and above you can set a custom expiry or choose to keep a transfer active indefinitely, which means the download link stays live until you decide to delete it. That's especially useful for ongoing document access, like contracts or briefs you want clients to be able to revisit. Free and Starter transfers are capped at a maximum of 3 days before the link expires.
Yes. Restoring an expired transfer reopens the download link, so anyone you originally sent it to can access the documents again without you sending a new transfer. If you want to share the restored transfer with additional people, you can copy the link from your Transfers panel and send it directly, or use the forwarding option to add new recipients without re-uploading the files.
