That recovery path works retroactively, so creative work you sent while on a Free or Starter account may already be waiting to restore the moment you upgrade to Ultimate. Every file comes back exactly as it was packaged, preserving folder structure, file names, and the original quality of whatever you sent, whether that is a ZIP of motion graphics, a folder of high-resolution illustrations, or a PDF presentation deck. Free and Starter accounts have no recovery option once a transfer expires, making Ultimate the only plan that keeps that path open for you.

Log in to your WeTransfer account, go to your Transfers panel, and find the expired transfer in your Sent list. If it is within the recovery window and you are on an Ultimate, Teams, or Enterprise plan, you will see a Recover or Restore option next to it. Click that and your files are brought back online with a fresh download link you can share again.


Yes, recovery on Ultimate works retroactively. Transfers you sent while on a Free or Starter account may already be eligible to restore as soon as you upgrade, as long as they fall within the recovery window. You do not need to have been on Ultimate when you originally sent them.


On Ultimate, Teams, and Enterprise plans, files under 256 MB can be recovered for up to one year after expiry. Files over 256 MB can be recovered for up to 90 days after expiry. If a transfer falls outside those windows, the files are permanently deleted and cannot be restored, so upgrading sooner rather than later gives you the widest recovery window.


WeTransfer never re-encodes or compresses your files during transfer or recovery, so everything comes back in its original quality and with the original folder structure intact. A recovered transfer with layered PSD files, 4K video exports, or lossless audio will look and behave exactly as it did when you first sent it.


The Recoverable option is enabled by default on new transfers for Ultimate subscribers, so in most cases you are already covered. It is worth double-checking in your transfer settings before you send, especially for large deliveries like a full illustration series or a finished video cut, just to confirm the option is active before the upload goes out.
