Landing on an expired link when you need to revisit a finished piece, pull a deliverable back from a client, or grab files you thought were safely shared is a specific kind of frustration for artists and creators. The good news is that an expired WeTransfer link and permanent file removal are two different events: by default, transfers are marked recoverable, meaning the underlying files can remain on WeTransfer's servers for an extended period after the link stops working. WeTransfer Ultimate subscribers can restore expired transfers directly from their Transfers panel, and that applies to transfers originally sent under a Free or Starter account as well, as long as the retention window is still open. If you were on the receiving end and still have the original expired link, you may also be able to trigger a restore from the expired download page when signed in with an eligible plan.

Not necessarily. An expired link means the download link has stopped working, but WeTransfer keeps recoverable transfers in a restorable state on its servers for an extended window after expiry: up to one year for files under 256 MB, and up to 90 days for files over 256 MB. Free and Starter users cannot self-restore once the link has expired, but the files may still be present on WeTransfer's servers. Upgrading to Ultimate before that retention window closes can make those transfers recoverable again.


If you are on WeTransfer Ultimate, go to your Transfers panel, find the expired transfer, and use the Recover or Restore option if it appears. This works even for transfers you originally sent while on a Free or Starter account, provided the retention window has not yet closed. The key thing to check is that the transfer was sent with the Recoverable option enabled, which is the default on new transfers.


Yes, in some cases. If your client opens the expired download link while signed in to WeTransfer with an Ultimate, Teams, or Enterprise plan, they may see a recovery option directly in the expired download experience that can extend the download window again without a fresh upload from you. This path is separate from the sender-side restore in the Transfers panel, so both routes can be worth trying before anyone starts re-uploading files.


WeTransfer handles a wide range of file types without compression or re-encoding, so your files arrive exactly as you sent them: design files, high-resolution images, 4K video, audio, PDFs, 3D and CAD files, ZIP archives, and Office documents are all supported. Recovery eligibility is based on plan and timing, not file type, so the same restore path applies whether you are sending a layered PSD or a finished video export.


WeTransfer Ultimate lets you set a custom expiry on any transfer, including keeping transfers active indefinitely so the link never goes dark in the first place. The Recoverable option is on by default for new transfers, which means files stay in a restorable state after expiry even if you forget to extend the link. Ultimate also includes per-transfer branding and a custom WeTransfer page, useful for creators who regularly share work with clients or fans.
