An expired link on a due diligence package, financial report, or signed document does not necessarily mean the transfer is gone. WeTransfer separates link expiry from permanent deletion, and Ultimate subscribers have a clear recovery path, whether they sent the transfer or received it.
Get your expired files back
Consulting and audit work runs on tight deadlines, and realizing a client's contract bundle or financial data transfer has expired at the wrong moment can feel catastrophic. The good news is that a link going dark is not the same as files being wiped: when a transfer is marked recoverable (the default), there is a window after expiry during which the files remain on WeTransfer's servers in a restorable state. WeTransfer Ultimate subscribers can restore expired transfers from their Transfers panel, including transfers originally sent under a Free or Starter account before upgrading. If you are on the receiving end and still have the original link, you may also be able to trigger a recovery from the expired download page while signed in with an eligible plan. Free and Starter users cannot self-restore, but an expired link alone is not confirmation the underlying files have been permanently removed.

Go to your Transfers panel in your WeTransfer account and find the expired transfer. If it is within the retention window and was marked recoverable (the default on new transfers), you will see an option to restore it, which reactivates the download link without any re-upload. Ultimate subscribers can do this directly, and transfers originally sent on a Free or Starter account before upgrading are also eligible if the retention window has not closed.
Yes, in many cases. If the recipient still has the original expired download link and opens it while signed in with a WeTransfer Ultimate, Teams, or Enterprise account, they may be able to trigger a recovery from the expired download experience, extending access again without the sender needing to re-upload. The transfer must still be within the retention window and have been sent with recoverability enabled.
Not necessarily. An expired link stops working for recipients, but that moment is separate from permanent deletion. WeTransfer holds recoverable transfers in a restorable state for an extended window after expiry, typically around 90 days for larger files and up to a year for smaller ones. Free and Starter users cannot self-restore, but if you upgrade to Ultimate before that retention window closes, those expired transfers may still be recoverable from your Transfers panel.
WeTransfer handles virtually any file type without compression or quality loss, including PDFs, Excel workbooks, Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, CSV data exports, ZIP archives, and more. That covers the full range of audit evidence packages, financial models, board reports, and contract sets that consulting teams typically exchange. Recovery applies to these file types just as it does to any other transfer, subject to the retention window and plan eligibility.
Yes. WeTransfer Ultimate lets you set a custom expiry on any transfer, including keeping it active indefinitely so the link never goes dark unless you actively delete it. You can also adjust the expiry date on an active transfer at any time from the Transfers panel, giving you the flexibility to extend access ahead of a deadline or project close-out without re-uploading anything.
