Recover expired audit and consulting file transfers

Engagement documents, financial models, and due diligence packages rarely have good substitutes once they go missing. WeTransfer Ultimate keeps expired transfers in a recoverable state from your Transfers panel, and recovery works retroactively, including transfers you sent before you had an Ultimate account.

For consulting and audit professionals, a transfer link going dark is not a minor inconvenience — it can mean requesting sensitive documents a second time, which raises questions no engagement team wants to answer. WeTransfer Ultimate lets you restore expired transfers yourself from your Transfers panel, without contacting the original sender or asking a client to re-upload anything. Recovery works retroactively, so transfers sent from a Free or Starter account may already be waiting the moment you upgrade to Ultimate. Every file returns exactly as it was packaged, preserving folder structure, file names, and the full contents of your Excel models, PDFs, ZIP archives, and any other deliverables. Free and Starter accounts have no recovery option once a transfer expires, so Ultimate is the only plan that keeps the path open.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

Log in to your Ultimate account, go to your Transfers panel, and find the expired transfer. If recovery is available, you will see a Recover or Restore option next to it. Click it and the transfer, along with all its files, is restored exactly as it was packaged, ready to share again via the same or a new link.

Yes. Recovery on Ultimate applies retroactively, which means transfers you sent while on a Free or Starter account may already be available to restore from the moment you upgrade. This covers engagement letters, financial models, and other documents sent before you ever had an Ultimate subscription, as long as they fall within the recovery window.

On Ultimate, files under 256 MB can be recovered for up to one year after expiry, and files over 256 MB can be recovered for up to 90 days. For most consulting and audit deliverables, including PDFs, Excel workbooks, and Word documents, the one-year window applies. Larger packages such as full data room exports or ZIP archives over 256 MB fall under the 90-day window.

WeTransfer supports any file type, so recovery covers the full range of materials an engagement might involve: PDF reports, Excel financial models, PowerPoint presentations, ZIP archives of document sets, scanned contracts, and any other deliverables packaged into a transfer. Files come back with no changes to their contents, naming, or folder structure.

The Recoverable option is enabled by default on new transfers for Ultimate, Teams, and Enterprise users, so in most cases you are already covered. It is worth confirming this setting is on before sending high-stakes packages such as final audit reports or due diligence files, and you can also pair transfers with password protection and restricted access to ensure only intended recipients can download them.
