An expired transfer link in the middle of a construction project is stressful, but it rarely means the files are gone for good. WeTransfer keeps recoverable transfers in a restorable state after a link stops working, and WeTransfer Ultimate gives both senders and recipients a practical route back to those files.
Get your expired files back
Construction projects run on shared documentation, from site plans and structural drawings to CAD models and survey data, so a dead transfer link at the wrong moment can stall real work. When a transfer expires on WeTransfer, the download link stops working, but that is a separate event from permanent file deletion: recoverable transfers stay accessible on WeTransfer's servers for an extended window after expiry. WeTransfer Ultimate subscribers can restore expired transfers directly from their Transfers panel, and that recovery path covers transfers originally sent under a Free or Starter account too, provided the retention window has not yet closed. If you are the person who received the transfer and still have the original expired link, you may also be able to trigger a recovery from the expired download page when signed in with an eligible plan. Free and Starter users cannot self-restore, but an expired link on its own is not confirmation that the underlying files have been permanently removed.

All your questions answered.
Not necessarily. An expired link means the download is no longer available to recipients, but WeTransfer holds recoverable transfers in a restorable state on its servers for an extended window after expiry, which can range from around 90 days to about a year depending on the total transfer size. Free and Starter users cannot self-restore, but if you upgrade to WeTransfer Ultimate before that retention window closes, those files may still be recoverable, including transfers sent before you upgraded.
Log in to your WeTransfer account, go to your Transfers panel, and find the expired transfer. If the transfer was marked recoverable when it was sent (the default setting) and you are on Ultimate, Teams, or Enterprise, you will see a restore option next to it. Restoring brings the transfer back and reactivates the download link, so you can reshare those site plans or CAD files without re-uploading them.
Yes, in some cases. If you still have the original expired link, open it in your browser and you may see a recovery option on the expired download page when you are logged in with a WeTransfer plan that includes recovery, such as Ultimate. This path lets you restore the transfer and extend the download window without any action from the sender, which can save time on fast-moving construction projects.
WeTransfer supports any file type without compression, so you can transfer and later recover DWG and DXF drawings, PDF specifications, 3D and BIM models, ZIP archives of project folders, high-resolution site photography, and Office documents such as project schedules and tender packs. Files are sent in their original quality with no re-encoding, which matters for large CAD files where resolution and data integrity are critical.
WeTransfer Ultimate lets you set a custom expiry on any transfer, including keeping it active indefinitely so the link never stops working unless you delete it yourself. That is useful for long-running construction projects where subcontractors or clients may need access to drawings months after the initial send. Ultimate also includes expired transfer recovery, malware scanning, and per-transfer branding, making it practical for sharing sensitive project documentation with clients and site teams.
