Advertising and marketing work moves fast, and hitting a dead transfer link when a client or colleague needs your campaign files is a frustrating but often solvable problem. When a transfer expires on WeTransfer, the download link stops working, but that event and the permanent removal of files from WeTransfer's servers are not the same thing. Recoverable transfers, which are enabled by default, sit in a restorable state after expiry, giving senders on WeTransfer Ultimate a clear path back through their Transfers panel. If you are on the receiving end and still have the original expired link, you may also be able to trigger a recovery from the expired download page when signed in with an eligible plan. Transfers sent while you were still on a Free or Starter account are included in that restore path, so older campaign files may still be within reach if you act before the retention window closes.

Not necessarily. An expired link stops recipients from downloading, but that is not the same moment files are permanently removed from WeTransfer's servers. Recoverable transfers, which are enabled by default when sending, stay in a restorable state for an extended window after expiry. Free and Starter users cannot self-restore, but upgrading to WeTransfer Ultimate before that retention window closes can still make those campaign files recoverable, so it is worth checking before assuming they are gone.


If you are on WeTransfer Ultimate, go to your Transfers panel, find the expired transfer, and look for a Recover or Restore option. That path also covers transfers you sent while on a Free or Starter account before you upgraded, so campaign files from an earlier period may still be restorable. The key variable is timing: files below 256 MB can be recovered for up to one year after expiry, and files above 256 MB for up to 90 days, so acting quickly matters.


Yes, in many cases. When someone opens an expired transfer link while signed in with a WeTransfer plan that includes recovery, such as Ultimate, they can trigger a restore from the expired download page, extending the download window again without requiring a fresh upload from the sender. This means a client or agency contact holding the original link has their own route back to the files, independent of whether the sender initiates anything.


WeTransfer handles any file type, including the heavy formats common in advertising and marketing work: high-resolution image files, 4K video edits, audio tracks, PDF presentations, design files from tools like Adobe Creative Suite, ZIP archives of asset bundles, and Office documents. Files are sent without compression or re-encoding, so originals land exactly as they were uploaded. All of these file types follow the same recovery rules, meaning an expired link for a large video export or a layered PSD is handled the same way as any other transfer.


WeTransfer Ultimate lets you set a custom expiry on any transfer or choose to keep it active indefinitely, which removes the risk of a link going dark mid-campaign. The Recoverable option is also on by default for new transfers, so files stay in a restorable state even if you choose to set an expiry date. For teams running multiple campaigns with shared assets, the Teams plan adds shared storage and centralized management so everyone works from the same pool of files.
