Recover your expired 3D file transfer links

Losing access to a 3D model or CAD file transfer shouldn't mean rebuilding the work or hunting down the original files again. WeTransfer Ultimate keeps expired transfers in a recoverable state, so your 3D assets stay within reach from your Transfers panel — even transfers sent before you upgraded.

Get your expired files back

When a download link to your 3D models, CAD drawings, or design files goes dark, the stakes are higher than with most file types — these assets take hours or days to produce and are often tied to active client projects or production pipelines. WeTransfer Ultimate addresses this directly, letting you restore expired transfers from your Transfers panel without re-exporting, re-packaging, or re-uploading anything. The recovery is retroactive, meaning 3D transfers you sent while on a Free or Starter plan may already be waiting in your account the moment you switch to Ultimate. Every file returns precisely as it was sent, with no reprocessing or changes to geometry, textures, or any associated project data. Free and Starter accounts have no recovery path once a transfer expires, so if 3D asset access matters beyond the initial delivery, Ultimate is the plan that keeps that option available.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

Yes, recovery works retroactively on Ultimate. Transfers you sent while on a Free or Starter plan may already be restorable from your Transfers panel the moment you upgrade, as long as they fall within the recovery window. This means CAD files, OBJ, FBX, or any other 3D format you transferred earlier could still be retrievable without any re-exporting or re-uploading.

The recovery window depends on file size. For files under 256 MB, you have up to one year after the transfer expires to restore it. For files over 256 MB, the window is up to 90 days. Large 3D scene files, multi-texture packages, or high-polygon exports often exceed 256 MB, so it's worth checking the transfer size in your panel to know which window applies.

Yes. WeTransfer never reprocesses, compresses, or alters files during transfer or recovery. Recovered 3D assets, whether they're CAD assemblies, texture-mapped meshes, or multi-file project folders, return in exactly the state they were uploaded, with no changes to geometry, scale, file format, or embedded data.

WeTransfer works with any file type, including common 3D and CAD formats such as OBJ, FBX, STL, STEP, IGES, Blender files, Maya scenes, Cinema 4D projects, and ZIP archives containing full project folders. On Ultimate, there is no per-transfer size cap, so even large scene packages or multi-gigabyte CAD assemblies can be sent in a single transfer.

The Recoverable option is turned on by default when you create a new transfer on Ultimate, so most 3D transfers you send will already be set up for recovery without any extra steps. If you want to double-check, you can confirm the setting in the transfer options panel before sending. Transfers with Recoverable disabled cannot be restored after expiry, so it's worth leaving it on whenever you're sharing valuable assets.
