A 3D file transfer link going dark does not automatically mean your work is gone. WeTransfer separates link expiry from permanent deletion, and if the transfer was set to recoverable, your files may still be waiting on WeTransfer's servers, ready to restore without re-uploading.
Get your expired files back
Hunting down a 3D model, CAD assembly, or scene file after a transfer link expires is stressful, especially when a collaborator or client is waiting on the other end. WeTransfer treats expiry and deletion as two distinct events, so the files behind an expired link are often still intact on WeTransfer's servers during a retention window that follows expiry. WeTransfer Ultimate subscribers can restore expired transfers straight from their Transfers panel, and someone who still holds the original expired link can also trigger a recovery from the expired download page when logged in with an eligible plan. Transfers you sent while on a Free or Starter account are part of that picture too, because upgrading to Ultimate within the retention window can make those older 3D file transfers restorable right away.

All your questions answered.
Not necessarily. On WeTransfer, link expiry and permanent deletion are two separate events. When a transfer is set to recoverable (the default on new transfers), the files remain in a restorable state on WeTransfer's servers for a window after the link goes dark. Free and Starter users cannot self-restore during that window, but the files are not automatically wiped the moment the link stops working, and upgrading to Ultimate before the window closes may still bring them back.
If you are on Ultimate, Teams, or Enterprise, go to your Transfers panel, find the expired transfer, and look for the Recover or Restore option. You can also restore from the expired download experience if you or someone with the link opens it while logged in with an eligible plan. Either route brings the transfer back without requiring you to re-upload your 3D files.
Yes. Someone who still has the original expired link can visit that link and, if logged in with a plan that includes recovery, trigger a restore directly from the expired download page. This extends the download window again without the sender needing to re-upload anything, which is useful when large 3D or CAD files are involved and a re-upload would take significant time.
It depends on where you are in the retention window. If the files are still within that window after expiry, upgrading to Ultimate can make the transfer restorable, including transfers sent before you had a paid plan. The retention window varies by file size, so upgrading sooner gives you the best chance. If the window has already closed and files have been permanently deleted, not even an upgrade can bring them back.
Yes. WeTransfer never compresses or re-encodes files during upload, storage, or recovery, so your 3D models, CAD assemblies, and scene files are stored in their original format and quality throughout. Recovering an expired transfer restores exactly what was sent, with no changes to file structure or fidelity.
