Password-protect your ZIP file transfers

Sending a ZIP archive full of files you've spent time preparing means controlling who can get inside it. WeTransfer lets you lock any transfer behind a password before you send the link, so whoever opens it is prompted to enter the code before a single file is accessible. No extra software, no configuration, and it works on every plan.

Keep your files private

ZIP archives are a common way to bundle project files, client deliverables, or sensitive documents, and password protection keeps that package closed until it reaches the right person. WeTransfer adds the password field directly in the upload window, so you set the lock before anything leaves your hands, and the password is never included in the notification email, leaving you to pass it through whichever channel you prefer. Your ZIP arrives exactly as you uploaded it, with no re-compression or changes to the files inside, so the archive opens cleanly on the other end. If you change your mind after sending, you can add, update, or remove the password from your Transfers panel at any time without re-uploading. For transfers that need an extra layer of control, you can also restrict access to specific email addresses, so only the people you name can download even after entering the correct password.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

When you add your ZIP to the transfer window, look for the password field in the transfer options before clicking Transfer. Type in your chosen password, finish setting up the transfer, and send it. Recipients will be prompted to enter the password the moment they open the download link, and nothing is accessible until they do. Remember to share the password with your recipients through a separate channel, like a message or email, since WeTransfer never includes it in the notification.

Yes. Go to your Transfers panel, open the transfer, and you will find options to set, change, or remove the password at any time. The update takes effect immediately, so if you need to rotate the password or lift the protection after the right person has downloaded, you do not need to re-upload the ZIP.

No. WeTransfer sends your ZIP exactly as it is, without adding further compression or modifying the contents. The files you packed into the archive before uploading are the same files your recipient unpacks at the other end, with no data loss or format changes along the way.

No account is needed to download. Recipients click the transfer link, enter the password you shared with them, and download the ZIP directly from the browser. They can also download individual files separately if they prefer, making it straightforward whether they want everything at once or just part of the archive.

A password is a shared code, meaning anyone who has it can open the transfer. Restricted access goes a step further by tying access to specific email addresses, so even someone with the correct password cannot download unless their email is on your list. You can use both at the same time on the same transfer for a tighter level of control over who gets inside your ZIP.
