When you upload your footage, you will find a password field in the transfer options panel — fill it in before clicking Transfer and the lock is set. If you forget to add one before sending, you can go to your Transfers panel, open the transfer, and set or change the password there without re-uploading anything. Passwords are case-sensitive and the code is never included in the notification email, so you share it with your recipient through a separate channel.
No. Password protection has no effect on the files themselves. WeTransfer sends footage in its original format with no re-encoding and no resolution loss, so a 4K RAW file, a ProRes master, or an H.264 export arrives exactly as you uploaded it. The password is purely an access layer — the files underneath are never touched.
Yes. Once a recipient enters the correct password, they can preview compatible video formats — including MP4 and MOV files up to 300 MB — directly in the browser before committing to a full download. This is useful when you want someone to spot-check a clip or confirm they have the right version without saving anything to their device first. They can also leave comments on individual files in the preview, which is handy for client feedback rounds.
No account is needed to download. Your recipient opens the transfer link, enters the password you have shared with them, and downloads the footage straight from the browser. They are not asked to sign up or log in at any point during the process.
Yes. Password protection works alongside restricted access, which limits downloads to a specific list of email addresses you define. Even if your link ends up somewhere it should not, only people who match your access list and know the password can get through. You can manage the access list from your transfer details page after sending, and changes take effect immediately. Download tracking is also available separately, letting you see who downloaded the footage and when.
