When you add your spreadsheet files to the transfer window, look for the password field in the transfer options before clicking Send. Type in the password you want to use, complete the transfer, and any recipient who opens the link will be asked to enter that password before they can download anything. The password is never sent inside the notification email, so you share it with the recipient through a separate channel of your choosing.
Password protection is available on every plan, including the free one, so you do not need to upgrade just to lock a spreadsheet transfer. On the free plan you can send up to 3 GB per transfer, which covers the vast majority of spreadsheet files. Paid plans like Ultimate extend what you can do with those transfers, but the password feature itself has no plan restriction.
No account is needed. The recipient clicks the download link, enters the password you shared with them separately, and can then access the files. This keeps things simple for colleagues, clients, or external partners who have never used WeTransfer before.
Yes. Go to your Transfers panel, open the transfer, and you will find options to set, change, or remove the password without having to re-upload anything. The change takes effect immediately, so if you need to rotate a password or lift the restriction for a new recipient, you can do that on the spot. Keep in mind WeTransfer cannot retrieve a forgotten password, so store it somewhere safe when you set one.
Yes, and for confidential data like payroll or financial forecasts the combination gives you two layers of control. Restricted access limits downloads to a named list of email addresses, meaning anyone who opens the link must verify their email against that list before WeTransfer grants access. Add a password on top of that and you have both identity-based filtering and a shared secret standing between the file and anyone who should not see it.
