Keep your photos behind a password

Not every photo is meant for everyone. WeTransfer lets you lock any transfer with a password before it goes out, so recipients reach a prompt first and can't get to your images until they type in the right one. It works on every plan, with no extra setup.

Keep your files private

Sharing photos from a shoot, sending client selects, or passing along anything personal — a password adds a direct layer of control that a bare link never gives you. You set it in the transfer window as you upload, and because it never appears in the notification email, you choose when and how to share it with your recipients. Supported image formats like JPEGs and PNGs can still be previewed in-browser after the password clears, so recipients can browse through what you've sent before committing to a full download. If your needs go further, you can also restrict access to a specific list of email addresses, so even knowing the link isn't enough to get in. WeTransfer encrypts every file in transit and at rest, meaning the password protection sits on top of security that was already there.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

When you add your photos to the transfer window, look for the password field in the transfer options before clicking send. Type in whatever password you want to use, complete the upload, and the link will require it on the other end. Because the password never appears in WeTransfer's notification email, you'll need to share it with your recipients separately, whether that's a text, a call, or another message.

Yes. Go to your Transfers panel, open the transfer, and you'll find options to set, change, or remove the password from there. The update takes effect straight away, so any recipient who tries the link after you change it will need the new password. Your photos themselves aren't affected by the change.

Both. Recipients hit the password prompt before they can see or do anything, including the in-browser preview. Once they enter the correct password, they can browse supported image formats like JPEGs and PNGs directly in their browser, and choose which photos to download rather than having to grab everything at once.

No account needed. Anyone with the link and the password can open the transfer and download the photos. WeTransfer is designed so recipients never have to sign up, which is useful when you're sending to clients or collaborators who aren't WeTransfer users.

Password protection works on any file type WeTransfer supports, including RAW formats like ARW, NEF, CR2, DNG, and others. The password gates the entire transfer regardless of what's inside it. Keep in mind that while common formats like JPEG and PNG can be previewed in-browser, RAW files will need to be downloaded before your recipients can open them.
