Send password-protected PDFs with ease

PDFs often carry contracts, proposals, briefs, or work that isn't meant for general circulation. WeTransfer lets you add a password to any PDF transfer at the point of upload, so recipients are prompted to enter it before they can view or download anything. No paid plan needed, no extra tools required.

Keep your files private

Sensitive PDFs deserve more than just a bare link. WeTransfer's password protection puts a prompt in front of your transfer, meaning only recipients who know the password can get to your files. Set it in the transfer window before uploading, then pass the password to your recipients through a separate channel, since it never appears in the notification email. Sharing a multi-page PDF report or a signed contract? Recipients can preview it in-browser first, and that preview is gated by the same password too. After sending, you can add, change, or remove the password from your Transfers panel without touching the original file.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

Open the transfer window on WeTransfer, add your PDF, and look for the Password field in the transfer options before clicking Transfer. Enter a password of your choice, finish setting up the transfer, and send. Anyone who opens the download link will be asked to enter the password before they can access or preview the file. The password is case-sensitive and can be any combination of characters.

Yes. WeTransfer lets recipients preview PDFs directly in the browser before downloading, and that preview sits behind the same password as the download. Recipients enter the password once and can then read through the document or download it. They don't need a WeTransfer account to do either.

Yes. Go to your Transfers panel, click the transfer, and you'll see options to set, change, or remove the password. The change takes effect immediately for anyone who opens the link after that point. Just remember to let your recipients know the new password through a separate channel, since WeTransfer doesn't include it in any notification emails.

Password protection is available on all WeTransfer plans, including the free one. You don't need to upgrade to lock a transfer behind a password. Every transfer is also encrypted in transit using TLS and at rest using AES-256, so the password adds an extra layer on top of security that's already in place.

Yes. All plans include a restricted access option that lets you specify a list of email addresses. Only recipients whose email matches your list can access the transfer, after verifying their identity. You can use this alongside password protection or on its own, and you can update the access list from your Transfers panel after sending.
