Share PDFs with a password, not a prayer

PDFs often carry contracts, briefs, proposals, or work you're just not ready to put out in the open. WeTransfer lets you attach a password to any PDF transfer before it leaves your hands, so whoever opens your link hits a prompt first and can't reach a single page until they type in the right one. No plugins, no extra steps.

Keep your files private

When a PDF holds sensitive information, a bare download link leaves too much to chance. WeTransfer builds the password gate into the transfer itself, so the file stays out of reach until your recipient clears the prompt you set. You add the password in the transfer window while your files are uploading, and it never gets included in the notification email, which means you decide how and when to pass it along. PDFs are also previewable in-browser once the password clears, so recipients can read through the document before downloading anything to their device. If you need to update or remove the password later, you can do that from your Transfers panel at any time without re-uploading the file.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

When you're setting up your transfer, look for the Password field in the transfer options panel before clicking Transfer. Type in the password you want, finish uploading, and that's it — anyone who opens the link will be prompted to enter it before they can view or download your PDF. The password is never included in the notification email, so you share it with your recipient separately through whatever channel makes sense.

Yes. Once a recipient enters the correct password, they can open the PDF directly in the browser without downloading it first. That preview is covered by the same password gate, so no one reaches it without clearing the prompt. If they decide they only want certain files from the transfer, they can choose to download selectively rather than grabbing everything at once.

No account is required on the recipient's side. They just open the transfer link, enter the password you shared with them, and they're in. WeTransfer keeps the download experience friction-free for whoever is on the receiving end.

Yes. Go to your Transfers panel, open the transfer, and you'll find the option to set, change, or remove the password. The change takes effect immediately, so the next time someone opens the link they'll face the updated prompt — or none at all, if you removed it. Just make sure to let your recipient know if the password changes.

You can. On top of the password, you can enable restricted access to limit downloads to a specific list of email addresses, so knowing the link and the password still isn't enough unless the opener's email is on your list. You can also enable download tracking to see exactly who accessed the file and when, which is useful any time you're sharing contracts, proposals, or other documents where accountability matters.
