Lock any file transfer behind a password

Sending files that aren't meant for everyone? WeTransfer lets you set a password on any transfer before it goes out. Recipients hit a prompt the moment they open your link, and nothing comes through until they enter the right code. Works on every plan, no configuration required.

Keep your files private

A shareable link is convenient, but a password makes sure the right person is actually on the other end. WeTransfer builds the password prompt directly into the transfer, so whoever opens your link has to clear it before seeing or downloading anything. You add the password in the transfer window while uploading, and since it never travels with the notification email, you stay in control of how and when it reaches your recipient. After sending, you can set, change, or remove the password at any time from your Transfers panel without re-uploading a single file. If you want tighter control still, you can combine password protection with restricted access, limiting downloads to a named list of email addresses on top of the password itself.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

Any file type you can send through WeTransfer can be password-protected, including ZIPs, design files, audio, 3D and CAD files, Office documents, and more. The password gates the entire transfer, so every file inside it is locked behind the same prompt. There is no separate process per file type.

Password protection is included on every WeTransfer plan, including the free tier. You do not need a paid subscription to lock a transfer. Just add the password in the transfer options before clicking Send, and it applies immediately.

No. WeTransfer never includes the password in the transfer notification email, by design. You decide how to pass it on, whether that's a separate message, a phone call, or any other channel. That separation is what makes the protection meaningful.

Yes. Go to your Transfers panel, open the transfer, and you will find options to set, change, or remove the password. The change takes effect immediately, so anyone who opens the link after that point will need the new password, while anyone who already downloaded the files is unaffected.

Yes. WeTransfer lets you combine password protection with restricted access, which limits downloads to a specific list of email addresses you define. That means a recipient needs both the link and the password, and their email address has to be on your approved list. For teams managing sensitive transfers regularly, WeTransfer Ultimate also adds download tracking, so you can see exactly who downloaded your files and when.
