Secure document transfers for government and NGOs

Sensitive documents, policy briefs, grant reports, and official correspondence need more than a shared link. WeTransfer lets you lock any transfer behind a password before it goes out, so recipients are prompted to enter it the moment they open your link. Nothing is visible, previewable, or downloadable until they do.

Keep your files private

Government organisations and NGOs handle documents that carry real weight, from funding proposals and compliance reports to legal agreements and beneficiary data. Password protection is built into every WeTransfer plan, meaning you can secure any document transfer without specialist tools, procurement processes, or IT support. You set the password inside the transfer window while your files are uploading, and it never travels in the same notification email as the download link, so you keep control over who receives it and through which channel. Once a transfer is out, you can add, update, or remove the password at any time from your Transfers panel without re-uploading anything. For documents requiring an additional layer of vetting, you can also restrict access to a specific list of email addresses on top of the password.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

Yes. Password protection is available on every WeTransfer plan, including the free one. Any sender, regardless of plan, can lock a document transfer behind a password before it goes out. Recipients are prompted to enter the password when they open the link, and nothing is accessible until they do.

Recipients do not need a WeTransfer account to access a password-protected transfer. They open the link, enter the password you shared with them separately, and can then preview or download the documents directly in their browser. No sign-up, no software installation.

Yes. You can set a password on a transfer and also enable restricted access, which limits downloads to a named list of email addresses. Anyone opening the link must both match the access list and enter the correct password before reaching any file. This two-layer approach is useful for documents like grant agreements, audit reports, or personal data files where controlling the exact recipients matters.

WeTransfer supports any file type, so you can password-protect transfers containing PDFs, Word documents, spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, ZIP archives, and more. PDFs and Office documents can also be previewed in-browser once the password clears, letting recipients read through a report or briefing before choosing to download it.

Yes. You can set, change, or remove the password on any active transfer at any time from your Transfers panel, without re-uploading the files. This is useful when access needs change, for example when a project phase closes, a contractor's engagement ends, or a document moves from restricted to public circulation.
