Send font files with a password lock

Typefaces represent real creative and commercial value. When you send font files through WeTransfer, you can add a password to the transfer before sharing the link, so only people who know it can get to your files. Password protection is available on every plan, works entirely in the browser, and takes just a moment to set up.

Keep your files private

Font files, whether commercial licenses, custom type families, or unreleased variable fonts, often need to reach specific people and nobody else. WeTransfer lets you set a password directly inside the upload window, and that password is never included in the notification email WeTransfer sends, so you pass it to the recipient through whatever channel you prefer. Your OTF, TTF, WOFF, WOFF2, and ZIP packages travel exactly as you uploaded them, with no compression or modification, so every glyph, weight, and metadata field arrives intact. If something changes after you send, you can add, update, or remove the password on any active transfer from your Transfers panel without re-uploading anything. For situations where tighter control makes sense, you can also pair a password with restricted access, which limits downloads to a named list of email addresses even if the link ends up somewhere unexpected.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

When you add your font files to the transfer window, look for the password field in the transfer options panel before clicking Transfer. Type in your chosen password there, and every recipient who opens the download link will be prompted to enter it before they can reach a single file. The password is case-sensitive and is never included in any notification WeTransfer sends, so you share it with the recipient separately through a message, call, or wherever you normally communicate.

No. WeTransfer sends files in their original state, with no compression, re-encoding, or modification of any kind. Your OTF, TTF, WOFF, WOFF2, or ZIP packages arrive exactly as you uploaded them, so every glyph, weight, hinting instruction, and embedded metadata is preserved. If you are sending a ZIP of a full type family, the folder structure comes through intact as well.

Yes. Go to your Transfers panel, open the transfer, and you will find options to set, change, or remove the password at any time while the transfer is still active. The change takes effect immediately, so if you need to update the password for a new recipient or remove it entirely, there is no need to re-upload the files.

No account is needed on the recipient's side. They simply open the download link, enter the password you shared with them, and download the files directly in their browser. This makes WeTransfer practical for sending to clients, printers, or anyone outside your team without asking them to sign up for anything.

A password is a solid first layer, but if you want tighter control, you can also enable restricted access on the same transfer. This limits downloads to a specific list of email addresses, so even if the link and password both circulate, only the people you have named can get through. You can manage that access list from the transfer details page at any time after sending.
