Send password-protected folders anyone can open safely

Upload a folder and lock it behind a password before sharing the link. Recipients enter the password when they open the transfer, and nothing inside is accessible until they do. Password protection is included on every plan and takes seconds to set up in the browser.

Keep your files private

Folders often contain a mix of files that belong together but should only reach the right person, and a password is the simplest way to make sure that happens. When you add files or an entire folder to a transfer on WeTransfer, a password field sits right there in the upload window. The folder structure you built stays intact on arrival, so recipients download everything exactly as you organised it, with no compression and no quality loss across any file type inside. If you need to update or remove the password after sending, you can do that from your Transfers panel at any time without re-uploading. For transfers that need tighter controls, password protection can run alongside restricted access, which limits downloads to a specific list of email addresses even if the link travels further than intended.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

When you add your folder to the transfer window, look for the password field in the transfer options before clicking Transfer. Enter your chosen password there, finish the upload, and anyone who opens the link will be prompted to enter it before they can access a single file. The password is never included in the notification email WeTransfer sends, so you share it with recipients through your own preferred channel.

Yes. WeTransfer uploads and delivers folders with their original structure intact. Recipients download the folder exactly as you organised it, including any nested subfolders, and no files are reordered, renamed, or compressed in a way that changes their content or quality.

Yes. Go to your Transfers panel, open the transfer, and you will find options to set, change, or remove the password on any active transfer. The update takes effect immediately, so if you need to rotate the password or remove it once a deadline has passed, you can do that without re-uploading the folder.

No account is needed. Recipients click the download link, enter the password you shared with them, and can immediately preview or download the files. The only thing standing between them and the folder is the password itself.

Yes. Password protection and restricted access work together on all plans. Restricted access limits downloads to a named list of email addresses, so even if someone has the correct password, they cannot proceed unless their email is on your list. Pairing both gives you two independent checks before anyone reaches the files inside your folder.
