Before uploading, fill in the Password field in the transfer options panel and then click Transfer. The password is stored securely and never appears in the download notification email, so you share it with your recipient through a separate channel such as a phone call, a secure message, or your firm's preferred communication method. If you need to update or remove the password after sending, open the transfer in your Transfers panel and select Change password or Remove at any time.
Yes. Password protection applies to the transfer itself rather than individual file types, so it works regardless of whether you are sending Excel workbooks, CSV exports, PDFs, Word documents, or ZIP archives bundling multiple files together. Files are sent without any compression or reformatting, so a multi-tab financial model or a signed contract arrives exactly as you prepared it.
You can use both at the same time. Password protection requires anyone who opens the link to enter the correct code before accessing files, while restricted access limits downloads to a specific list of email addresses you define. Together they create two independent checkpoints, which is useful for transfers carrying particularly sensitive client or regulatory data where you want both a passphrase barrier and a verified identity requirement.
No account is needed on the recipient side. Anyone you send the link to can open the transfer, enter the password, and download the files directly in their browser without signing up for anything. This keeps friction low for clients, auditors, or counterparties who may not use WeTransfer themselves.
All files are encrypted in transit using TLS and at rest using AES-256, with storage on AWS infrastructure in EU data centers. Files are never viewed, sold, or used to train AI models, and automated malware scanning runs on uploads for paid plans.
