Send data files that only the right people can open

Some data files are nobody else's business. WeTransfer lets you lock any transfer behind a password before you share the link, so recipients must enter it before reaching your files. It takes seconds to set up, works entirely in the browser, and is available on every plan.

Keep your files private

When data files carry sensitive information, a shareable download link on its own is not always enough. WeTransfer puts a password field directly in the upload window, so you set the code before your transfer ever leaves your hands. That password is never included in the notification email WeTransfer sends to recipients, meaning you decide how to pass it along, whether through a secure messaging channel, a phone call, or a separate email. Your files arrive exactly as you uploaded them, with no compression or quality loss, so spreadsheets, databases, CSVs, ZIP archives, and other data formats remain intact from end to end. If your access needs change after sending, you can add, update, or remove the password on any active transfer directly from your Transfers panel, without re-uploading a single file.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

When you open a transfer in WeTransfer, you will find a password field in the transfer options panel before you click send. Fill it in, complete your upload, and recipients will be prompted to enter that password before they can access any of your files. The password is never sent in the transfer notification email, so you share the code through whatever channel works best for you.

Yes. Go to your Transfers panel, open the transfer, and select the option to set, change, or remove the password. Changes take effect immediately, so if you need to rotate a code or open access to a dataset after the initial send, you can do it without re-uploading anything.

No account is needed to download a transfer. Recipients click the link, enter the password you have shared with them separately, and download the files. The password prompt is the only gate they pass through before reaching your data.

Yes. Password protection can run alongside restricted access, which limits downloads to a specific list of email addresses you define. Even if someone has the correct password, they cannot download the files unless their email address is on your access list. For data containing personally identifiable information or other sensitive records, layering both controls gives you tighter assurance over who actually reaches the files.

WeTransfer sends your files in their original condition, with no re-encoding, reformatting, or quality loss. Spreadsheets, CSVs, databases, ZIP archives, and other data formats arrive at the other end exactly as you uploaded them, so the integrity of your data is preserved throughout.
