Send password-protected 3D files with ease

3D models, CAD assemblies, and design files often represent months of work and contain details that should stay between you and the right people. WeTransfer lets you lock any transfer behind a password before sharing the link, so recipients must enter it before reaching a single file. Password protection is included on every plan, works in the browser, and takes seconds to set up.

Keep your files private

When you share 3D files, the work inside them is often proprietary, and controlling who can access a download link matters as much as sending the files themselves. WeTransfer puts the password field directly in the upload window, and that password is never included in the notification WeTransfer sends, so you choose how to pass it to the right person. Your OBJ, STL, FBX, CAD, or ZIP packages arrive exactly as you uploaded them, with no compression or quality loss, preserving every vertex and texture at the original resolution. If access needs change after sending, you can add, update, or remove the password on any active transfer from your Transfers panel without re-uploading anything. For projects that need an extra layer of control, password protection can run alongside restricted access, which limits downloads to a named list of email addresses.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

When you add your files to the upload window, look for the password field in the transfer options panel before clicking Transfer. Type your chosen password, complete the upload, and recipients will be prompted to enter it before they can access any file in the transfer. The password is never included in the download notification WeTransfer sends, so you share the code with your recipient through a separate channel, such as a direct message or phone call.

Yes. Go to your Transfers panel, open the transfer, and you will see options to set, change, or remove the password. The update takes effect immediately, so any recipient who opens the link after the change will encounter the new requirement. This works without re-uploading the files, which is useful when you share large 3D packages and do not want to repeat a lengthy upload.

No. WeTransfer sends files in their original state, with no re-encoding, no resolution changes, and no quality loss. An STL, OBJ, FBX, or any other 3D format arrives at the other end byte-for-byte as you uploaded it, so geometry, textures, and embedded metadata are all intact. If you send multiple files, WeTransfer packages them into a ZIP using lossless compression, which does not alter the contents.

No. Recipients do not need a WeTransfer account to access a transfer. They open the link, enter the password you shared with them, and download the files directly in their browser. A free account is only required to send transfers, not to receive them.

Yes. Password protection and restricted access can be used together on the same transfer. Restricted access limits downloads to a specific list of email addresses you define, so even someone who has the correct password cannot download the files unless their email is on your list. This combination gives you two independent layers of access control, which is useful for proprietary design files, unreleased product models, or licensed 3D assets.
