Lock your shared link behind a password

Some files are only meant for certain eyes. WeTransfer lets you set a password on any transfer before you send it, so anyone who follows your link has to enter the right password before they can see or download anything. It works on every plan, takes a few seconds to set up, and you stay in control even after the transfer is out.

Keep your files private

When you share a link, you can't always guarantee it stays with the right person. Adding a password to your transfer puts a gate between your files and anyone who clicks the link, whether you're sending design files, documents, audio, images, or anything else. You set the password in the transfer window before uploading, and it never travels with the notification email, so you decide how to pass it on through a channel of your choice. If circumstances change after you've already sent the transfer, you can add, update, or remove the password from your Transfers panel at any time without uploading the files again. Password protection is available on all plans, including the free one, and sits on top of WeTransfer's end-to-end encryption rather than replacing it.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

Before uploading, find the Password field in the transfer options panel and type in the password you want to use. Once you click Transfer and the upload completes, anyone who opens the download link will be prompted to enter that password before they can access anything. The password is never included in the transfer notification email, so you share it with your recipient through a separate channel.

Yes. Go to your Transfers panel, open the transfer, and select Set password, Change password, or Remove, depending on what you need. The change takes effect immediately, so the updated password applies the next time anyone tries to open the link. You don't need to re-upload the files or create a new transfer.

No account is needed to download from WeTransfer. Your recipient just opens the link, enters the password you've shared with them, and can then preview or download the files. The password prompt is the only extra step between them and the files.

The password gates the whole transfer, including the in-browser preview. Recipients can't preview images, audio, PDFs, or video files in the browser until they've entered the correct password first. Nothing is accessible until they get past that prompt.

Yes. You can use a password alongside WeTransfer's other access options, such as restricted access, which limits the transfer to specific email addresses, or tracked downloads, which lets you see who accessed your files and when. Together, these give you layered control over a single transfer, and all are available on every plan.
