WeTransfer sends every file exactly as it was captured or exported, with no re-encoding and no resolution loss, so camera-original footage, 4K rushes, and high-resolution RAW images arrive at the other end unchanged. You upload straight from your mobile browser, and the recipient downloads the same file you put in. There is no conversion happening in the middle.
No account is needed on the receiving end. Anyone you send a transfer to, whether a picture editor, a network producer, or a wire service contact, can open the download link and access the files without registering. You need a free WeTransfer account to send, but that's the only signup required.
Before sending, you can add a password to the transfer that recipients must enter before downloading. You can also restrict access to a specific list of email addresses, so only the named individuals can open the files even if the link is forwarded. Download tracking lets you see exactly who accessed the transfer and when, giving you a clear record for anything time-sensitive or confidential.
WeTransfer handles any file type without modification, including video (MP4, MOV, and camera-native formats), RAW and JPEG photos, audio files, PDFs, ZIP archives, and design files. If you can upload it from your phone's storage, WeTransfer will send it. There's no special handling or format conversion applied to any file.
The free plan allows up to 3 GB total and up to 10 transfers per rolling 30-day window, and download links expire after 3 days. For individual journalists that works fine for lightweight text and image packages, but a media team regularly sharing high-resolution footage, large audio masters, or multi-file production assets would benefit from upgrading to Ultimate or Teams. Those plans remove the per-transfer size cap, support unlimited transfers, allow custom or indefinite expiry, and unlock branded pages, shared storage, and centralised billing for a whole team.
