Yes, sending ZIP files is free on WeTransfer. A free account lets you send up to 3 GB per transfer, which covers most ZIP archives. If your archive is larger than that, upgrading to Ultimate removes the per-transfer size cap so you can send as much as you need.
No. WeTransfer sends your ZIP file exactly as it is, with no additional compression or modification. Whatever you packed into the archive, whether raw photos, videos, or layered design files, arrives at the other end in the same condition it left yours.
No account is needed to download. Your recipient just opens the link or clicks through from the notification email and downloads the file directly. They can also preview supported file types inside the archive before deciding what to save.
You have two options, both available on a free account. You can add a password to the transfer, which the recipient needs before they can download, and you share that password separately outside of WeTransfer. Alternatively, you can restrict access to specific email addresses, so only the people on your list can open the link after verifying their identity.
On a free account, transfers expire after up to 3 days and are then permanently removed from WeTransfer's servers. Free accounts cannot recover expired transfers. If you regularly send large archives or need links to stay live longer, or want the ability to recover a transfer after it expires, upgrading to Ultimate lets you set a custom expiry or keep transfers available indefinitely, and includes expired transfer recovery.
