WeTransfer accepts any file type, so MP4, MOV, MXF, ProRes, AVI, and anything else you work with will upload and transfer without issue. There's no conversion or re-encoding involved, meaning your footage lands with the recipient in exactly the format you sent it.
No. WeTransfer does not compress, re-encode, or alter your files in any way during transfer. A 4K clip or a high-bitrate ProRes file arrives on the other end identical to what you uploaded, resolution and all.
Yes. Recipients can watch MP4 and MOV files (up to 300 MB) directly in the browser before deciding to download. That makes it straightforward for a client or editor to confirm they have the right version without pulling down the full file first. They can also leave comments on individual files in the preview, useful for quick feedback on cuts or selects.
You have two options, both available on a free account. You can add a password to the transfer, which you then share separately with your intended recipients. Or you can restrict access to a specific list of email addresses, so only those people can open the link after verifying who they are. Both keep rough cuts, unreleased content, or client deliverables away from unintended eyes.
The free plan lets you send up to 3 GB per transfer and up to 10 transfers within a rolling 30-day window, with links staying active for up to 3 days. For most one-off handoffs those limits are fine, but if you regularly send large projects, need links that stay live indefinitely, or want to recover a link after it expires, upgrading to Ultimate removes the transfer size cap, lets you set custom expiry or no expiry at all, and gives you the ability to recover expired transfers retroactively.
