Know exactly who opened your shared ZIP file

Sharing a ZIP archive with a client or collaborator is straightforward. Knowing whether they actually opened it is the part that usually goes unanswered. WeTransfer tracks previews and downloads on your transfers, logging each access against a verified email address so you can see who engaged with your files and when.

Send your first transfer

Keep count of who views your transfer

When you send a ZIP file through WeTransfer, you get more visibility than a basic file-sharing link provides. Recipients can browse individual files inside the archive directly in the browser before downloading, and that preview activity appears in your Transfers panel as a separate event from a full download, so you can tell who looked without pulling everything. Enabling download tracking gives you a named, timestamped record of every access tied to a verified email address, turning a silent delivery into a clear picture of recipient engagement. For ZIP files going to a defined audience, such as a creative brief, a project pack, or a client delivery, you can restrict access to a specific list of email addresses so the archive stays out of reach for anyone not on it. Your files are delivered exactly as packaged, with no re-compression and no changes to the contents inside.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

Yes. WeTransfer lets recipients preview supported file types inside a transfer directly in the browser, and that preview activity is recorded in your Transfers panel as its own distinct event, separate from a full download. This means you can tell whether a recipient browsed the contents of your ZIP delivery or actually saved the files to their device, which can change how and when you follow up.

Before sending, enable download tracking in the transfer settings panel. Once active, every download event is logged with the recipient's verified email address and a timestamp, visible from your Transfers panel. You can enable it on any transfer regardless of file type, including ZIP archives.

You can restrict access to a specific list of email addresses before or after sending. Anyone who opens the link and isn't on your list won't be able to download the files, even if the link itself is forwarded. This is useful when a ZIP contains confidential project files, client assets, or anything meant for a defined group only.

With download tracking enabled, each access event is logged individually against the email address used to verify the download. So if three people open the same transfer, you get three separate entries in the activity record, each with its own name, email address, and timestamp, rather than an anonymous combined count.

No, recipients do not need a WeTransfer account to download a transfer. They can access the download link directly, and they can preview supported file types inside the transfer in the browser without signing up. If you have download tracking or restricted access enabled, they will need to verify their email address to proceed, but that is a one-step process and does not require creating an account.
