Sending a PDF proposal or client document and hearing nothing back is frustrating. WeTransfer tells you when your PDF has been previewed or downloaded, and by whom, so you can follow up with confidence instead of sending a chase email into the void.
Keep count of who views your transfer
PDF deliveries, proposals, and contracts often carry real stakes, so visibility after sending matters. WeTransfer lets recipients view your PDF directly in the browser before downloading, and every one of those preview events is an engagement signal you can act on from your Transfers panel. Enabling tracked downloads means anyone who opens your link has to verify their email address first, giving you a named, timestamped record tied to a real person. If your document is going to a defined group, Restricted downloads let you specify exactly which email addresses are permitted access, blocking everyone else automatically. Your PDF arrives exactly as you sent it, with no compression or quality changes at any point.
Our features are designed to minimize how much of your data we — or anyone else — can access, so you can keep what's yours, yours.

All your questions answered.
Yes on both counts. WeTransfer lets recipients open and read a PDF directly in the browser without saving it, so they can decide whether to download before they commit. If you have download tracking enabled, you get a record each time the transfer is accessed, making even a browse-without-download a visible engagement signal in your Transfers panel.
Before you click Send, open the transfer settings and enable Tracked downloads under Access Control. From that point, anyone who opens your PDF link has to verify their email address, and WeTransfer logs each access event with their address and a timestamp. You can review the full activity from the transfer details page without needing any third-party tool.
Tracked downloads allow anyone with the link to access the PDF after verifying their email, and you receive a detailed notification each time someone opens it. Restricted downloads go a step further by letting you specify a list of approved email addresses, so anyone not on that list is turned away when they try to open the link. For sensitive documents like contracts or confidential proposals, Restricted downloads give you the tightest control.
Yes, password protection and download tracking work independently and can both be active on the same transfer. Adding a password means recipients need the correct phrase before they can even reach the PDF, while tracking then logs each verified access event on top of that. You share the password outside of WeTransfer, since it is never included in the notification email.
Basic download status, showing whether a transfer has been downloaded or not, is available on all plans including Free. For named, email-verified tracking with a detailed activity log per recipient, you need a paid plan such as Ultimate. Restricted downloads, which limit access to a specific list of email addresses, are also a paid feature.
